Gateway graduate Tyler Scott to play basketball at Kent State

Gateway star Tyler Scott, who led the Gators to back-to-back WPIAL Class AAAA championships, has done an about-face and will play college basketball at Kent State instead of spending a year at Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy.
As a partial qualifier, the recent graduate will take an academic redshirt as a freshman at Kent State then have four seasons of eligibility remaining at the Mid-American Conference school.
“I felt like prep school was sort of a waste of time,” Scott said. “It would have felt like another year in high school. I wanted to get started in my college career.”
Scott had scholarship offers from Cleveland State, Dayton, Duquesne and James Madison, and was receiving interest from Detroit, Morehead State, Penn State and West Virginia.
“There's a lot of good players in that conference, and it's definitely a challenging conference,” Scott said. “I have the ability to become one of those better players if I put my mind to it and develop a good work ethic. That's my goal.”
A three-year starter and two-time Tribune-Review Terrific 10 selection, the 6-foot-6, 195-pound swingman averaged 16.1 points per game as a senior and had a reputation for his no-look passes, ability to rebound and lead the fast break or finish with a highlight dunk.
Scott will become the fourth member of his family to play Division I basketball. His father, Rod Scott, played at Duquesne; his mother, Jennifer Bruce Scott, and his sister, Shayla, both played at Pitt. Tyler and Shayla both finished their careers as Gateway's all-time scoring leaders.
“There was no question in my mind that he's a Division I talent,” Gateway coach Mitch Adams said. “The kid is a dynamic, exciting player. He probably has the best court vision of any kid I've ever coached. He's always seen a play before it would happen. He's a great player, in the Big East/ACC mode. Kent State is getting a great player. He's meant a lot to our program and a lot to me. I'm going to miss Tyler Scott.”
