The Springdale girls basketball team is dealing with the loss of several key players from last season.
Erin Gilmartin and Mary Holmes — the team's leading scorer and rebounder, respectively, last season — graduated. But despite the loss of leadership, Dynamos coach Dan Ross expects to have a senior-led team again this year.
“We have three seniors, and they're the only players with a lot of varsity experience,” Ross said. “There are some juniors expected to step up.”
This year's team is expected to be led by senior guard Madeline Glamp, the team's second-best scorer as a junior with an average of 9.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
Other key players are seniors Diana Killian and Sydney Smajda.
For Springdale to take the next step in a tough Section 3-AA, it will need improved depth from its underclassmen. Ross said juniors Alex Gradwell, Amanda Koprivikar, Sarah Udanis and Keely Mager have enough experience to make an impact.
Aside from the seniors, the Dynamos are a relatively young team. They also are slightly undersized with no player taller than 5-foot-8. To make up for the lack of size, the Dynamos intend to run an up-tempo style.
“We have to be more defensive this year,” Ross said. “We lack some skill with some of our younger kids, and we'll try to do some things in transition.”
Springdale finished 8-15 and was 6-6 (third place) in Section 3-AA last season. The Dynamos lost to Quaker Valley in the preliminary round of the playoffs.
The Dynamos will open the season at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Knoch in the Springdale tip-off tournament. They will open section play Dec. 17 at East Allegheny.
