High school roundup: Apollo-Ridge boys secure tourney with suffocating defense

A devastating full-court press helped Apollo-Ridge force 15 first-quarter turnovers, and the Vikings stormed to a 71-23 victory over Leechburg on Saturday night in the Leechburg Tip-off Tournament.
Tournament MVP Josh Reynolds led four Apollo-Ridge players in double figures with 13 points as the Vikings jumped out to a 21-2 lead.
Leechburg did not score in the fourth quarter.
Kittanning 78, Cambria Heights 67 — Kevin Barnes scored 21 points to lead four Kittanning players in double figures as the Wildcats (2-0) won the Kittanning Tournament.
Fox Chapel 58, North Hills 46 — The Foxes won the North Hills Tournament to start the season 2-0 for the first time since 2008.
Knoch 56, Sewickley Academy 42 — Marc Vaughn scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Knights (1-1) to a victory in the consolation game of the Ambridge Tournament. The win was new coach Ron McNabb's first at Knoch.
Austin Miller added 13 points in the win.
Riverview 57, Purchase Line 23 — Sam Gonsowski tied a game-high with 13 points, and Zach Lesnick added 11 points to lead Riverview (1-1) past Purchase Line (0-2) in the consolation game of the Kittanning Tournament.
Deer Lakes 62, Highlands 39 — Tim Jaczesko scored a game-high 25 points as Deer Lakes (1-1) won the consolation game of the Plum Tournament.
Allan Cratsenberg led Highlands with 10 points.
Kiski Area 55, Johnstown 53 — Kiski Area overcame 31 second-half points from Johnstown and held on to win the Mt. Lebanon consolation game.
Nick Stone scored 17 points, and Adam Robison chipped in 11 for Kiski Area (1-1).
Cheswick Christian Academy 66, Jefferson County Christian 36 — Sophomore guard Antione Malloy scored a game-high 14 points to lead Cheswick (2-2) to a win in the consolation game of the Eden Christian Tournament.
St. Joseph 64, Trinity Christian 50 — John Arcuri hit 5 of 8 3-pointers and scored 29 points for the Spartans (1-1) in the consolation game of their tournament.
Sam Predabon recorded a double-double for St. Joseph, scoring 18 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. John Wallace scored 31 points for Trinity Christian (0-2) in the defeat.
Deer Lakes 63, Springdale 34 — Class AA No. 3 Deer Lakes (2-0) rolled to victory in the championship game of the Springdale Tournament as Becca Babincak tied a game-high with 13 points, and Danielle Kearns added 11.
Sydney Smajda led Springdale (1-1) with 13 points and Amanda Koprivnikar added 11.
Burrell 44, Shady Side Academy 32 — Freshman Natalie Myers recorded a double-double with 15 points and 17 rebounds as Class AA No. 4 Burrell won the Shady Side Academy Tournament.
Fox Chapel 33, Hampton 24 — Fox Chapel won the championship game of the Seneca Valley Tournament.
Junior Erin Mathias scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and was named tournament MVP. Teammates Taylor Cohen, who had eight steals in the final, was named to the all-tournament team.
Riverview 59, East Allegheny 7 — Riverview held East Allegheny scoreless in the fourth quarter in the consolation game of the Freeport Tournament.
Ashley Bruni had 11 points.
Penn Hills 54, Kiski Area 47 — Senior Maddie Antone eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career, tallying 22 points and 19 rebounds, but Kiski Area (0-2) fell in the Butler consolation game.
Taylor Muffie scored 20 points for Kiski Area.
Apollo Ridge 54, Knoch 22 — Ashley Emminger scored 18 points and grabbed 17 rebounds as Apollo-Ridge won the Springdale consolation game.
Kiski Area throttled the field at the season-opening Eastern Area Invitational, while Kittanning posted a strong second-place showing at Gateway.
Class-AAA No. 4-ranked Kiski Area won the 18-team tournament with 229.5 points, and Class-AA No. 3 Kittanning followed with 171. Norwin, another Class AAA team, finished third with 157.5 points.
Kiski Area's Cole Landowski (145), Matt McCutcheon (195) and Shane Kuhn (285) won titles. Kittanning's Jason Nolf earned Outstanding Wrestler Award after winning the 132-pound title.
• Burrell senior Phil Marra (145 pounds) and junior Corey Falleroni (152) captured titles to lead the Bucs to a fifth-place finish at the 15-team Cumberland Valley Kickoff Classic. Alan Beattie (285) settled for runner-up honors following a 2-0 loss in the finals. Steve Edwards (138) took third, and Damon Greenwald (126) placed fifth.
• Knoch senior Blaine Elliott (132) claimed second place and junior teammate Ben Nowicki (170) was third at the 15-team Hickory Tournament. Brandon Yobst (145) and Bailey Savage (182) both finished fourth for the Knights.
