Local roundup: Norwin drops 1st section game of season

Norwin suffered its first Section 1-AAAA loss of the season, as Corey Stanford scored a game-high 20 points to lead host Penn-Trafford (9-5, 3-3) to a 64-54 win over the Knights. Norwin (8-5, 5-1) which led, 45-42, after three quarters, was paced by 17 points from Matt Stewart.
Elizabeth Forward 72, Belle Vernon 70 — Jason Capco scored a game-high 24 points, but it wasn't enough as the Leopards fell to the Warriors (8-6, 3-3) in Section 4.
JaQuan Davidson scored 20 to lead four Elizabeth Forward players in double figures.
East Allegheny 52, Steel Valley 50 — Martel Crosby scored the last eight points of the game, including a pair of free throws with 2 seconds left, to close out the Wildcats' win.
Shawn Adair scored 14 points for East Allegheny (7-7, 3-3) which moved into a tie with Steel Valley and Elizabeth Forward for third place in Section 4.
Serra Catholic 53, South Allegheny 36 — George Prota scored a game-high 17 as the Eagles rebounded from a disappointing loss Friday at Greensburg Central Catholic.
Clairton 79, Geibel 16 — Bryon Clifford scored 26 points to lead the Bears (6-3, 4-0), who will host Monessen (5-8, 4-0) on Friday for first place in Section 3.
Girls basketball
Penn Hills 61, Woodland Hills 56 — Desiree Garland scored a game-high 22 points and Velrika Jones-Carey 21, but it wasn't enough as the Wolverines (4-9, 1-5) continued their season-long slide in Section 2.
Gateway 54, McKeesport 29 — Katey Wilson, Maria Taylor and Chelsea Richardson each scored 11 points and Jada Epps chipped in 10 for an easy Gators road win.
Penn-Trafford 62, Norwin 36 — Taylor Cortazzo scored 19 points to lead three players in double figures and help Penn-Trafford (11-2, 6-1) to an easy victory in a battle for first place in Section 1. Norwin (7-7, 5-2) was led by Maddie Guffey with 11.
Serra Catholic 82, West Greene 36 — Leslie Hoye scored a team-high 14 points as the Eagles rolled to a running-clock victory over visiting West Greene.
