Four players scored in double figures as Kiski Area's boys basketball team won its seventh straight game, 61-51, over visiting Latrobe in a Section 1-AAA game on Friday night in Allegheny Township.
Mike Simmons scored 16 points, Mitchell Murdock had 14, Nick Stone 12 and Joe Brungo 10 for the Cavaliers (11-4, 5-2), who led by as many as 17 late in the third.
Latrobe (9-7, 4-3) cut the margin to 45-38 with a 10-1 run to close the third, but Kiski Area scored the first six points of the fourth, on back-door layups, to get back to a double-figure advantage. Mike Sofric led Latrobe with 15 points and Chad Kissel added 12.
Penn-Trafford 75, A lbert Gallatin 31 — Penn-Trafford benefited from a trio of 16-point scorers as Corey Stanford, Christian Rohaus and Dorian Stevens each paced the Warriors (11-5, 4-3) in a Section 1-AAAA win.
Central Catholic 69, Franklin Regional 66 (OT) — James Taylor-Lane's late-game free throw sent the game into overtime, and Central Catholic (10-5, 6-2) went on win a Section 2-AAAA contest. David Urso had 17 points to lead Central Catholic. Charan Singh scored 18 for Franklin Regional (7-8, 2-6).
Uniontown 69, Derry 43 — Jordan Pratt scored 32 points as Class AAA No. 4 Uniontown (12-2, 6-2) scored a Section 3 victory. Christian Kezmarsky scored 15 points for the Red Raiders.
Yough 69, Greensburg Salem 52 — Ben D'Amico scored 21 points as Yough (6-9, 3-4) won a Section 3-AAA matchup. Max Ponzurick scored 21 for Greensburg Salem (2-12, 2-5).
Laurel Highlands 74, Southmoreland 35 – Shane Guthrie's 22 points guided Laurel Highlands (10-5, 6-1) to a Section 3-AAA win. Zac Black led the Scotties (0-14, 0-7) with 10 points.
Greensburg C.C. 71, Shady Side Academy 45 — Brian Graytok's 25 points led all scorers as Class AA No. 3 Greensburg C.C. (15-1, 7-0) remained unbeaten in Section 3.
Jeannette 51, South Allegheny 40 — Julian Batts led all scorers with 16 points as Class AA No. 2 Jeannette (13-2, 6-1) won a Section 3 matchup. Jeiron Lewis and Kordell Thompson scored 15 points for the Gladiators (5-10, 2-5).
Clairton 56, Monessen 38 — Bryan Clifford scored a game-high 15 points as Class A No. 5 Clairton (6-3, 5-0) won in Section 3-A. Javon Brown led the Greyhounds (5-9, 4-1) with 12 points.
Belle Vernon 42, Mt. Pleasant 35 — Jessica Slagus scored 10 points to pace Belle Vernon (10-4) to a nonsection victory. Alexa Szelong had 10 points for Mt. Pleasant (7-8).
Latrobe 55, Saltsburg 30 — Rachael Kollar had 22 points and 10 rebounds as Latrobe (7-7) won in nonsection play. Madison Kollar added 13 points for the Tigers.
Greensburg Salem 67, Albert Gallatin 54 — Karly Mellinger scored a game-high 23 points, including five 3-pointers, as Greensburg Salem (12-3) won a nonsection game. Claire Oberdorf and Jayne Oberdorf scored 19 points and 12 points, respectively, for the Golden Lions.
Keystone Oaks 43, Burrell 40 — Burrell went scoreless in the fourth quarter as Keystone Oaks (9-6) won in nonsection play. Natalie Myers led Burrell (9-2) with 12 points, and Jaila Manga added 10.
Clairton senior Tyler Boyd was selected as the Mercury Award winner Friday night at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association banquet. The Pitt recruit, who has decided not to take visits to Michigan State or Penn State, according to coach Tom Nola, was named the top prep player in Western Pennsylvania after rushing for 2,584 yards and scoring 51 touchdowns while leading Clairton to its fourth straight PIAA title. North Allegheny's Patrick Kugler and Mack Leftwich and Central Valley's Robert Foster were the other finalists. The PAA also inducted former Pirate Dick Groat into its hall of fame.
