Basketball roundup: North Catholic advances to WPIAL quarterfinals
Dominic Robb scored a game-high 16 points to lead No. 3 North Catholic to a 55-48 win over Rochester in the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs at North Allegheny on Friday.
North Catholic (15-5) played without leading scorer Danny Savulchak (20.9 points per game), who was sick. Rochester closed to within 45-43 with 2:00 left, but back-to-back baskets by Jon Savulchak in the next 16 seconds ended the threat. Alyjah Elmore had 15 for Rochester (7-16).
North Catholic will play OLSH in the quarterfinals next Friday at a site and time to be determined.
Clairton 74, St. Joseph 38 — Bryon Clifford scored 21 points and Titus Howard added 16 for Clairton (14-6) in its WPIAL Class A first-round win at Chartiers Valley.
Mapletown 49, Leechburg 29 — Kevin Ridgley made four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 22 points for Mapletown in a WPIAL Class A preliminary-round game at Chartiers Valley. Mapletown (7-16), which earned its first playoff win since 1972, will play top-seeded Lincoln Park (17-5) Tuesday.
Monessen 60, Sewickley Academy 52 — Clintell Gillaspie scored 14 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter to lead Monessen (10-13) to a WPIAL Class A first-round victory at Keystone Oaks. Justice Rawlins added 18 points for the Greyhounds. Keenan Hickton scored 16 points and John O'Malley had 12 for the Panthers (8-13).
OLSH 56, Trinity Christian 40 — OLSH won its Class A first-round playoff game at Cornell. OLSH (19-4) will play North Catholic in the quarterfinals next Friday.
Union 78, Quigley 60 —Markel Peace had 31 points to lead No. 4 Union (17-5) to a WPIAL Class A first-round win. Union will play No. 5 Clairton in the quarterfinals next Friday. Zach Herman had 18 points for Quigley Catholic (11-12).
Vincentian 106, W. Beaver 73 — Ryan Wolf scored 28 points and Tony DiNardo added 22 for Vincentian in its WPIAL Class A first-round victory at West Allegheny. Nick Miller led Western Beaver (6-15) with 43 points. Vincentian (22-1) will play Monessen in the quarterfinals next Friday.
Ambridge 65, East Allegheny 53 — Stephen McGinnis scored 22 of his game-high 28 points in the first half to lead Ambridge in a WPIAL Class AAA preliminary-round win. The Bridgers (14-8) will play Montour in the first round Tuesday.
Indiana 59, Elizabeth Forward 56 — Indiana used a 24-9 run in the fourth quarter to overcome a 12-point deficit and win a WPIAL Class AAA preliminary-round game at Yough. Darius Carter had 21 points and 17 rebounds for Indiana (17-6), which will play Beaver in the first round Tuesday. Elizabeth Forward's Austin Matta, who had 11 points, rimmed out a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Kittanning 77, Yough 56 — Sterling Henry scored 23 points, and Noah Kunst added 18 for Kittanning (19-4) in a WPIAL Class AAA preliminary-round win at Gateway. The playoff victory was Kittanning's first since 1984. Josh Sterner sank four 3-pointers to finish with a team-high 16 points for Yough (8-15). Kittanning will play Central Valley in the first round Tuesday.
Knoch 52, Mt. Pleasant 40 — Austin Miller scored a team-high 18 points, including four 3-pointers, and Dakota Bruggeman added 16 points to lead Knoch to a Class AAA preliminary-round win. Knoch (12-11) faces No. 1 Chartiers Valley (19-3) on Tuesday.
South Park 67, Steel Valley 60 (2OT) — Carter Grote scored nine of his 17 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to help the Eagles advance to the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs. South Park (13-9) will play second-seeded Mars.
