With the departure of former coach Lou Rood, the task of rebuilding Bentworth's football program falls to Bob Niziol.

The 28-year-old, who was a Bearcats' assistant the past three years, will look to bring a new mentality to his team.

“I'm hoping we're a little more competitive, for sure,” Niziol said. “We went through seven miserable weeks last year. I'm hoping the kids can go the extra mile this season. I hope they'll compete.”

Last season, the Bearcats lost seven straight games by a combined score of 369-0.

Their only win last season was a 19-8 win over Avella, which finished winless. It was their only win in two seasons, and only the third in three years.

“I really want the kids to do well,” Niziol said. “I want them to experience more success than they've had. Hopefully, we have some players that can go to college and continue playing football, whether it's D-I or D-II.”

The Bearcats will return three offensive linemen this season, but experience at the skill positions will be thin.

“We have some guys returning that saw some time last year, but no starters,” Niziol said. “Our offseason attendance numbers have been slightly up from last year. I expect to see numbers about where they were last year.”
