A meager two victories last season was an improvement on Mapletown's winless record in 2010. The idea now is to continue the trend.

“That's it,” Mapletown coach George Messich said. “Play better. Get better.”

While it doesn't happen automatically, Mapletown is looking for more punch on offense and a better idea of how to defend after being outscored by an average of 28-10 en route to a 2-7 record last season.

“We think the offense will be a lot better than last year,” Messich said. “We feel like we have speed on both sides now, so we should continue to improve.”

Junior running back Colby Kincell returns after rushing for 500 yards and five touchdowns. Sophomore Adam Hein could blossom into another productive runner, Messich said.

Kevin Ridgley, a senior quarterback primarily with junior varsity experience, is expected to settle into the lineup and lead the offense following the graduation of Marcus Cumpston, who passed for 307 yards and two touchdowns a year ago.

Messich was impressed with Ridgley's play at a summer 7-on-7 camp.
