Bishop Canevin wins Black Hills opener
Imani Christian began its first WPIAL game with a bang.
But the thunder in Bishop Canevin's thunder-and-lightning rushing attack, as well as the Crusaders' defense, made the biggest noise opening night.
Fullback Jim Tersak rushed for 100 yards and three touchdowns, and the defense made it stand up as Class A No. 2 Bishop Canevin beat Imani Christian, 21-6, in a Black Hills Conference opener.
“They've got a lot of excellent athletes, and they can be very explosive,” Bishop Canevin coach Bob Jacoby said. “That's what we were concerned about. They made mistakes. We made mistakes. But I think the big advantage we have (is) we were able to overcome our mistakes.”
Sophomore Giovanni DeMarzo added 98 yards on 24 carries for Bishop Canevin, which forced three Imani Christian turnovers.
The Saints' first offensive play as a member of the WPIAL was a big one.
After taking over on the 20-yard line following a Bishop Canevin punt, Saints quarterback Khari Hicks threw a lateral pass to wide receiver Michael Wright, who completed a pass downfield to Eric Scott. The 75-yard pass play set up a 10-yard Brendan Edwards touchdown run.
“We wanted to get our kids a little bit of positive energy coming out the gate,” Imani Christian coach Harvey Smith said. “We were able to do that on that first drive. But then, we started getting some penalties and things like that, a couple dropped balls — and those really killed us.”
The Crusaders answered that score with one of their own. DeMarzo and Tersak took Bishop Canevin 65 yards on seven plays, capped by a 6-yard Tersak run.
Bishop Canevin took advantage of an Imani Christian miscue to widen its lead.
Wright tried to field a rolling punt and fumbled, and the Crusaders recovered on the Saints' 23.
Five plays later, Tersak plowed in from a yard out.
After a scoreless third quarter, Bishop Canevin put the game away in the fourth with a 12-play, 66-yard drive that took nearly eight minutes.
Tersak scored his third touchdown, this one from 1 yard out, with 1:02 left on the clock.
Imani Christian travels to Serra Catholic next week, while Bishop Canevin will host Chartiers-Houston.
