Trib HS Insider Q&A: Clairton's Titus Howard
TribLIVE Sports Videos
Titus Howard delivered hard hits as one-third of Clairton's Division I secondary in Thursday's victory over Monessen (with Tyler Boyd and Terrish Webb being the others). A senior and Pitt recruit, Howard (6-foot-4, 175 pounds) also leads the Bears this season with eight receptions.
Q: What inspired your Thursday night performance?
A: Actually, I was just so ready for that game. I was waiting a long time for Monessen, because they were saying that was going to be the team to beat us. I knew they had a real good quarterback (Chavas Rawlins) who was going to challenge me, so I was real hyped.
Q: With so much buildup, could there be a letdown?
A: We'll keep our heads on straight. Don't start getting cocky or anything like that. Keep coming to practice prepared to work. I don't think it will be a problem. It seems like everybody's still focused.
Q: Do you like the Black Hills' tougher lineup?
A: We're enjoying it a lot. We're liking the competition, it seems like the toughest (conference). These teams are actually trying to put up a fight against us. They're answering back.
Q: Did you record Thursday's game?
A: My parents had it on the DVR at the house so I could see it whenever I got home. I got home pretty late, so I only watched half. But I wanted to see a couple plays. My first hard hit, I wanted to see that.
Q: Do you prefer offense or defense?
A: Probably defense. I like to hit and tackle.
Q: Do you and Tyler Boyd battle in practice?
A: We do a lot of one-on-ones at practice. He'll win a couple; I've won a couple. We go at it a lot at practice. I feel like he's getting me better.
Q: What did you like about Pitt?
A: I like that they're close to home. They were always one of my favorite teams growing up. It felt like home. I've already played on (Heinz Field), so it just felt right.
Q: Do you have a favorite pass play at wideout?
A: They're all the same for me. I like going out there, running routes and feeling the ball in my hands. But I do like jumpball routes, because I'm taller; I could jump a little and use my body.
Q: How would Clairton fare against a Class AAA or AAAA team?
A: I think we would do pretty good. I know the guys on my team are not going to back down from any challenge. We'd go out there and play our hardest.
