Springdale run game leads way in shutout of Leechburg

Springdale coach Dave Leasure has no trouble pointing out what his team does best.
“We're a downhill running team,” Leasure said. “This is what you're going to see the rest of the year: downhill running game, good defense and winning the kicking game.”
Springdale's “downhill” rushing propelled the Dynamos up and over Leechburg, 22-0, on Friday night in a Class A Eastern Conference contest at Veterans Memorial Field.
Springdale senior running back Sean Dugan accounted for 241 of Springdale's 363 yards from scrimmage, including runs of 36, 29, 50 and 41 yards. Dugan also scored three times on 20 carries for Springdale (3-2, 2-1).
Senior quarterback Jake Helman ran in a two-point conversion, and junior kicker Adam Winklman added two extra points.
Springdale's success came despite committing eight of its 10 penalties on offense.
“They keep answering adversity throughout the year,” Leasure said. “As long as we keep doing that, we'll be all right.”
Springdale's defense played well, limiting Leechburg (1-4, 1-3) to 43 yards and two first downs. The Blue Devils managed only 8 yards in the first half.
Leechburg was shut out for the third time in its past four games. The Blue Devils have scored only 23 points this year.
“I'm definitely proud of the way they're fighting,” Leechburg coach Mark George said. “We just have to learn how to win. We could have competed better.”
Through the majority of the game, Leechburg faced a 15-0 deficit against a Springdale team that can possess the ball for long stretches with extended drives.
“Springdale has a winning tradition,” George said. “They're a tough team to play, let alone having to come down here to play. They're a well-coached team.”
Dugan's third touchdown put the Blue Devils behind by three scores.
“Sometimes we take a couple steps forward, maybe take a step back, but we're not falling all the way back down the stairs,” George said. “I think this team will fight for the next four games.”
