North Catholic sophomore P.J. Fulmore, a 5-foot-6, 170-pounder, has rushed for 1,616 yards and 19 touchdowns on 258 carries this season. A high-honors student with a 4.3 GPA, Fulmore ran for 100 yards and scored three touchdowns in a 22-15 quarterfinal victory over Rochester last week to lead the Trojans to the WPIAL Class A semifinals for the first time since 2009.

Q: Did you expect to have this type of season?

A: I trained hard in the off-season, so I thought I would have a good season, but I didn't have any predictions of how good it would be. I didn't expect to have that many rushing yards, but it was nice to have that many.

Q: What stands out about your running style?

A: I like to run downhill. I have good moves, but I like to lay it on people.

Q: Does your height help?

A: Actually, it does help a lot. My fullback, Jared Fragapane, is 6-foot-4, so I can hide behind him and make cuts off his back.

Q: Your father, Mike, coaches Wilkinsburg. What was it like to play against his team this season?

A: It was pretty fun because I knew most of the kids on the team. Coming out with a win was great. I had a bet that if we won, he had to wear North Catholic gear to his practice. But it never happened.

Q: How did it feel to get your first interception against Rochester?

A: It was in the second quarter, and they were in scoring position when I intercepted it in the end zone. It was pretty big because it came up at a big time.

Q: How big was that win?

A: It was great because a lot of people have been doubting us all season. Even the first few playoff games, we were picked to lose but ended up winning. Now we're just focused on Sto-Rox and getting to Heinz Field.

Q: What do you think of playing Sto-Rox?

A: When I was in midgets for the Brookline Knights, we played them in the 7-year-old championship and won. I don't really remember much. We have to shut down their passing game. They have a really good quarterback, Lenny Williams, so we have to try to run the ball down their throats.

Q: What is P.J. short for?

A: Parris Jermaine. I think my grandma was the one who started calling me P.J. It doesn't really make a difference to me. That's just what everyone calls me, even the teachers.
