Coming off its first loss of the season, Avonworth got back on track with an emphatic 39-0 win over Springdale on Friday night at Veterans' Memorial Field.
The Antelopes (6-1, 5-1 Eastern Conference) took just three plays to score as quarterback Matt Donovan faked a handoff to Luke Bauer and hit Josh Drawal down the right side for a 47-yard pass and a 7-0 lead 1 minute, 22 seconds into the game.
Avonworth's ground attack was the difference as four players scored rushing touchdowns.
“We have a lot of playmakers,” Avonworth coach Duke Johncour said. “We have receivers. We have running backs. We have a quarterback that can run, so it's nice in that aspect that we have the ability to spread the ball around.”
Drawal added to the Antelopes' lead on their second possession, breaking free for a 22-yard scoring run.
Bauer and Moses Giles added two more rushing TDs (17 yards and 1 yard, respectively) to build a 27-0 halftime lead.
With most of its starters on the sideline in the second half, Avonworth turned to Kevin Simpson at running back.
While Springdale (2-5, 2-4) slowed the Antelopes, Simpson still increased the lead to 33-0 with an 18-yard run before backup quarterback Paul Heflin hit Kurt Niklaus for a 69-yard scoring pass a few drives later.
The Antelopes forced four first-half sacks and blocked two punts that led to touchdowns.
“Our kids executed the plays,” Johncour said. “I thought we left some plays on the field where we didn't execute well in the first half, but the starters, they did good when they were in there.”
The Dynamos abandoned the pass early but didn't have much success on the ground. The Dynamos didn't convert their second first down until midway through the third quarter.
“Avonworth's a very good football team,” Springdale coach Dave Leasure said. “I believe, along with North Catholic, they could win it all.”
