Westmoreland high school roundup: Penn-Trafford girls shut out Hempfield
The Penn-Trafford girls soccer team continued its hot streak Wednesday night with a 3-0 victory over Hempfield in a Section 4-AAAA game at Hempfield's Spartan Stadium.
Hannah Nguyen scored twice and Sarah Nguyen netted one goal for the Warriors (11-2, 7-0), who have won 10 straight games, including three consecutive shutouts.
Lauren Stovar, Hannah Nguyen and Mackenzie Aunkst had assists. Megan Giesey posted the shutout.
Penn-Trafford has outscored opponents 51-9.
Kiski Area 8, Latrobe 0 — Sydney Palla recorded a hat trick to help Kiski Area (7-3, 5-2) cruise past Latrobe (1-10, 0-7) in a Section 4-AAAA match. Kaylee Elwood scored two goals and added two assists for the Cavs.
Norwin 10, Connellsville 1 — Lexy Kendro and Emily Harrigan each scored three goals to lead No. 2 Norwin (10-1, 6-1) to a Section 4-AAAA victory. Emily Shaw, Katelyn Kauffman, Lexi Gray and Anna Durmis also scored for the Knights. Morgan Green scored for Connellsville (6-6, 2-5).
Hampton 2, Franklin Regional 1— Logan Nicholas scored with 31 seconds left to give Hampton (4-8-1, 4-2-1) a Section 1-AAA win over visiting Franklin Regional (9-3, 5-2).
Mt. Pleasant 12, Albert Gallatin 0 — Megan Liberoni scored three times and MacKenzie Leeder, Brooke Ulery and Ally Bloom all scored twice as Mt. Pleasant (6-6-1, 5-2-1) won in Section 2-AAA. Lexi Stanek, Ashton Clark and Kayla Moninger added goals. Hannah Brown posted the shutout.
Elizabeth Forward 2, Greensburg Salem 0 — Bri Skalican and Natalie Chornak scored as Elizabeth Forward (8-4, 8-1) won a Section 2-AAA game at Greensburg Salem (3-11, 3-6).
Yough 3, Brownsville 2 — Justine Appolonia scored twice on penalty kicks and added another goal in the second half as No. 4 Yough (10-1, 7-1) earned a Section 3-AA win.
Southmoreland 3, Derry 0 — Mercedes Smartnick, Mackenzie Blair and Ashley Barnhart scored as Southmoreland (4-7, 4-5) picked up a Section 2-AA victory over visiting Derry (1-11, 1-7).
Serra Catholic 5, Greensburg Central Catholic 4 (OT) — A penalty kick in overtime led Serra Catholic (6-6, 5-3) to a Section 1-A victory over the No. 1-ranked Centurions (8-2, 8-1). Sydney Ward, Sara Orndoff, Brenna Springer and Sam Felder scored for Greensburg Central Catholic.
Riverview 8, Jeannette 1 — Francesca Lio had three goals and three assists as Riverview (3-9, 3-6) defeated Jeannette (1-10, 0-8) in Section 1-A.
Bentworth 3, Monessen 0 — Paige Marshalek, Jocelyn Timlin and Rori Schreiber scored to lead No. 4 Bentworth (8-3-1, 7-1-1) to a Section 2-A victory at Monessen (3-7-1, 1-6-1).
Franklin Regional 3, South Park 1 — Zach Guidry and Shane Popko scored for Franklin Regional (11-2) in a nonsection win over Class AA No. 1 South Park (10-1).
Neshannock 5, Greensburg Central Catholic 0 — Neshannock's Crista Natidio edged GCC's Marlayna Verenna in three sets, and Neshanncok won close matches throughout the lineup en route to a win in the WPIAL Class AA consolation match. Neshannock advanced to the PIAA tournament. For GCC, Anna Vitale fell 7-6 (2), 6-4, and Erin Schulte lost 7-5, 7-5 in singles.
