High school roundup: Freeport golfers earn 1st playoff berth since '94

Freeport's boys golfers are back in the WPIAL team finals for the first time since 1994.
The Yellowjackets finished second in their Class AA semifinal tournament Tuesday at Indian Run Golf Course in Avella by posting a 418. Burgettstown won with a score of 417.
“It's awesome for them,” Freeport coach Joe Sprumont said. “They've had such a good year, and they are a part of the school's history now.”
Senior Robbie Miller and freshman Audrey Clawson led Freeport with 18-hole scores of 79. Junior Cole Hepler followed with an 84, and seniors Richard VanDruff and Luke Mariotti each carded 88s.
The top three teams advanced to the finals, set for Thursday at Cedarbrook Golf Course near Belle Vernon.
Kittanning 3, Greensburg Salem 0 — Kirsten Wolfe served four aces, had five kills and earned 12 digs for Kittanning (8-3, 6-2) in the Section 3-AA win. Terra Schall added six kills and 15 digs, while Nellie Toy had five kills. Setter Emily Knepshield finished with 21 assists.
West Shamokin 3, St. Joseph 0 — Jill Glover led West Shamokin (8-2, 8-2) in the Section 1-A match with 10 kills, while Amanda Wensel, Kelly Clowser and Alecia Calhoun each added four.
Freeport 3, Deer Lakes 0 — Ashley Sample finished with 10 kills, two aces and three blocks for Freeport (11-1, 9-1) in the Section 4-AA victory. Alexis Schrecengost had seven blocks and six kills while Lauren Frazetta had four blocks and three kills. Emily Toy and Britney Bianco combined for 36 assists.
Boys cross country
Freeport, West Shamokin win — Freeport cruised by West Shamokin and Riverview in a Section 4-AA tri-meet, winning by scores of 18-41 and 20-41. Colin Meehan and Caleb Smith took the top two spots for the Yellowjackets.
West Shamokin edged Riverview, 24-31, behind strong efforts by fourth-place finisher Logan Stancombe and 10th-place finisher David Batistig.
Ford City nips Kittanning — Neither Ford City nor Kittanning had an answer for Shady Side Academy, which easily won the Section 4-AA tri-meet. But the Sabers bested the Wildcats, 27-28. Nathaniel Sedlacek took seventh to lead Ford City, and Jason Nolf had a team-best sixth-place finish for Kittanning.
Girls cross country
Freeport sweeps — The Yellowjackets secured their second straight Section 4-AA title and increased their section win streak to 24 with victories over West Shamokin and Riverview. Kayla Zboran, Becca Dudek and Rachel Kubeldis had a one-two-three finish for Freeport.
Lizzy Cornish placed eighth to lead West Shamokin, which also lost to Riverview.
Kittanning wins a close one — Kittanning's 26-30 win over Ford City eased the sting of a lopsided loss to Shady Side Academy in Section 4-AA. Emily Kutch led the Wildcats with a sixth-place finish.
Claire Smathers placed first overall with a time of 22:21 to pace Ford City, which also lost to Shady Side Academy.
