BVA, Charleroi to collide in tournament finale

It will be the Belle Vernon Area versus Charleroi at 8 p.m. tonight for the championship of the Charleroi Girls Tip-Off Tournament.
In Friday's early game, BVA picked up its ticket to the finals by slicing through Carmichaels, 65-27. Senior forward Jessica Slagus got out to a rousing start, pouring in a game-high 24 points while grabbing 14 rebounds.
The lady Leps trailed 13-11 after one quarter, but outscored Carmichaels 16-6 in the second quarter to take the lead for good, 27-19, at halftime.
The Lady Leps (1-0) held Carmichaels to just eight points in the second half.
Carmichaels got 14 points Morgan Berardei.
In the nightcap, the host lady Cougars did their part to advance by downing Perry Academy, 54-45, in the coaching debut of Joe Grodz.
Charleroi jumped out to a 19-6 lead in the first quarter as Mia Woytovich scored seven of her game-high 21 points.
Perry cut the gap to 25-19 at halftime, but Woytovich scored eight points in the third quarter as the hosts took a 39-32 lead into the fourth quarter.
Backing Woytovich in double figures for the winners was Carina Gottheld with 12 points.
Perry was led by Latisha Fortson with 17 points and Janelle Barber with 13.
West Mifflin 65, Monessen 19
In the McKeesport Tournament, Monessen never stood a chance against the talented lady Tigers, who raced out to a 35-7 first quarter lead and held a commanding 49-10 lead at intermission.
Taylor Thomas scored 24 points for West Mifflin with Alyssa Cairns and Abbey Popp each chipping in with 12.
Monessen was led by Mariah Ward with 12 points.
Quaker Valley 49, Ringgold 31
In the Fort Cherry Tournament, Ringgold failed to get a player in double figures while Quaker Valley got 27 points from Sierra Perlik.
Ringgold was outscored 13-7 in the second quarter to trail 21-12 at halftime.
Ringgold will meet Fort Cherry, a 77-41 loser to McGuffey, in the consolation game.
E. Forward 62, Derry 13
In the opening game of the Southmoreland Tournament, the Lady Warriors rolled to the easy win as Dana Buck and Abigail Sporio scored 12 points each and teammate Natalie Fekula added 10 points.
Sporio also had 11 steals and Fekula had eight rebounds.
Yough 47, Southmoreland 25
The Lady Cougars moved into the finals of the Southmoreland Tournament against EF with the win over the hosts as Natalie Peebles was the only player from either team to hit double figures with 14 points.
Yough trailed 11-8 after one quarter, but outscored the losers 28-6 over the next two quarters to seize the lead.
Hempfield 81, Belle Vernon Area 37
Kason Harrell had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Hempfield (1-0) rolled to an easy season-opening victory in its own tournament.
The Spartans led 50-22 at halftime as the winners hit six of their seven three-pointers.
Michael Nauman had 12 points and 10 rebounds the win, while Jason Capco scored 12 for BVA (0-1).
Frazier 72, Geibel 69
The Commodores opened the season on a winning note as Charles Manack led a trio of players n double figures with 23 points. Jared Rebovich had 18 points while Paul Pelick added 14.
Geibel was led by Aaron Agostoni with a game-high 24 points while Tyler Schweiss added 22 and Martin Berish had 18.
Valley 69, Yough 46
At the Springdale Tournament, Valley didn't let Yough coach and former Valley assistant Wayne Greiser get a victory, as three players scored in double figures for the Vikings.
Josh Sterner (15) and Kirk Brown (14) combined for 29 points for the Cougars (0-1).
Chaz Cheatham and Tyler Gardlock scored 12 points apiece and Caleb Davis added 11 for the Vikings (1-0).
E. Forward 62, Southmoreland 29
In the opening game of the Brownsville Tournament, EF blasted the Scotties as Austin Matta had 22 points and JaQuan Davidson added 16.
EF broke the game open in the second half by outscoring Southmoreland 37-14.
EF will meet Brownsville, a 44-29 winner over South Allegheny, in the title game.
