Thomas Jefferson secures first place in section

The Thomas Jefferson girls' varsity volleyball team wrapped up in the first half of the Section 7-AA season with an unblemished record.
The Lady Jaguars stood in first place in the section standings with a 6-0 record — ahead of the likes of Elizabeth Forward (5-1), West Mifflin (4-2), Southmoreland (2-4), Yough (2-4), Belle Vernon (1-5) and South Allegheny (1-5).
The local squad shut out every section opponent except Elizabeth Forward.
Thomas Jefferson's starting lineup this year includes junior setter Mariah Schrum; middle hitters Renee Miller, a junior, and Rachel Stover, a sophomore; outside hitters Lexi German and Jessica Albrecht, both juniors; opposite hitter Jessica Hinkle, a senior; and libero Allie Yurkovich, a sophomore.
The starting back row specialists are Ashley Kohley, a senior, and Katheryn Rotthoff, a junior.

The Brentwood girls' volleyball team, meanwhile, held onto third place in Section 2-A at the halfway point of the 2012 season.
Serra Catholic led the standings in the section with a perfect 6-0 record, followed by Vincentian (5-1), Brentwood (4-2), North Catholic (3-3), Sto-Rox (2-4), Wilkinsburg (1-5) and Neighborhood Academy (0-6).
Brentwood's starting lineup includes senior Victoria Healy and junior Brooke McWilliams, at the setter position; outside hitters Mara Eisenbarth, a senior, and Alexandra Gibbons, a junior; middle hitters Tammi Hilburn, a junior, and Katelyn McNamara, a sophomore; plus defensive specialists Tammy Garcia and Annie Harding, a both juniors, and Christina Cranmer, a senior.

Turning to the Class AA division, there was a three-way tie atop the Section 6 standings at the halfway point of the season.
Seton-La Salle was one of the three first-place teams, as the Lady Rebels, South Fayette and South Park all were 4-1, ahead of Keystone Oaks (2-3), Steel Valley (1-4) and East Allegheny (0-5).
