Local roundup: Deer Lakes girls use 3-pointers to sink Carlynton

Deer Lakes' girls basketball team dialed long distance to post its sixth straight victory Monday night.

The Class AA No. 4-ranked Lancers connected on 14 3-pointers, including a perfect 7 of 7 in the third quarter, on the way to a 60-32 victory over Carlynton in a nonsection game.

Deer Lakes (18-2) was 14 for 17 from 3-point range at the end of three quarters.

Danielle Kearns scored 19 points, Becca Babincak added 17 and Nichole Kearns had 12 for the Lancers, who outscored Carlynton (11-10), 25-6, in the third quarter.

Daneille Kearns his five threes, and Kearns made four.

Burrell 56, West Shamokin 27 — Sydney Bordonaro led Class AA No. 2 Burrell (17-2, 9-0) with 19 points in a Section 1-AA win over West Shamokin (11-10, 4-6). Kelsey Oddis chipped in 16 points for the Bucs, and Erika Finn added 13.

Jill Glover led the Wolves with 17 points.

Ford City 58, Leechburg 9 — Allyson Cujas had a game-high 15 points for Ford City (13-7, 5-4) in a Section 1-AA win over Leechburg (0-20, 0-10). The Sabers extended their winning streak to five.

North Catholic 72, St. Joseph 50 — St. Joseph (10-12, 7-5) couldn't overcome a brilliant effort from North Catholic's Lauren Wolosik. The senior Central Connecicut State recruit tied her own school record with 44 points while also adding 10 rebounds, seven steals and making six 3-pointers and 10 of 10 free throws for North Catholic (13-7, 10-1) in a Section 2-A win. Mallory Heinle led the Spartans with 23 points, and Amanda Klawinski chipped in 13.

Boys basketball

Mars 73, Freeport 47 — Matt Getsy finished with 19 points for the Planets as Mars downed Freeport in a Section 1-AAA matchup. Zach May recorded 13 points for Mars (16-3, 10-0), and Mitchell Buzard tallied 12 points. Robbie Miller led the Yellowjackets (8-9, 3-7) with 18 points, and Josh Beale registered 11 points.

Freeport played without leading scorer Brendan Lynch, who has a sprained ankle.

Apollo-Ridge 61, Penns Manor 41 — Apollo-Ridge won the nightcap of its four-game “Orange Out” event to raise money for multiple sclerosis with a nonsection win over Penns Manor. Josh Reynolds led the Vikings (14-6) with 13 points, while Cody Billingsley chipped in 11.

Johnny Rizzo led Penns Manor with 13 points.


Freeport 5, Deer Lakes 3 — Michael Frazetta tallied two goals as the Yellowjackets (13-3-1) skated past the Lancers in a Class A game at Ice Connection. Brendon Zack scored a goal and had two assists for Freeport.

Zack's goal was the game-winner at 8:24 of the third period.

Mitchel Rupprecht and Thomas Lisowski recorded a goal and an assist each for Deer Lakes (6-11-1).

Plum 8, Gateway 3 — Andrew Walters netted four goals and notched two assists for the Mustangs (7-8-1) in a Class AA win over Gateway (6-10). David Stonebraker added two goals and two assists for Plum.

Taylor Siwik and Camden Cacolice registered a goal and an assist apiece for the Gators.

Games postponed

The South Allegheny at Springdale girls basketball game scheduled for Monday night was postponed and will be made up Tuesday night as part of a girls-boys doubleheader. The girls game wll start at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30.

Both teams will play South Allegheny.

The Norwin at Kiski Area girls game also was postponed and will be played at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at Kiski Area.
