WPIAL announces baseball, softball realignment

| Monday, March 17, 2014, 8:18 p.m.

The winners of five consecutive WPIAL Class AAAA baseball titles, North Allegheny, Pine-Richland and Seneca Valley will reunite as section rivals in 2015.

The WPIAL Board of Control on Monday approved updated baseball, softball and swimming alignments for next school year. Among the notable baseball changes, Pine-Richland will return to Section 1-AAAA after two seasons in Section 4. The Rams were WPIAL champions in 2010, NA won in 2013 and 2009, and SV in 2012 and 2011.

Moon also will join Section 1-AAAA. Section 3 and Section 4 were heavily revamped. Among the most-discussed moves was relocating Kiski Area to Section 3 with Central Catholic, Fox Chapel, Penn Hills, Shaler and Woodland Hills.

The last two WPIAL Class AA champions, Beaver and Ellwood City, will both move to Section 1-AAA.

In softball, reigning WPIAL Class A champion Neshannock will join Section 5-AA, which is home to Class AA winner Riverside.
