To be honest, I don't enjoy introductions.

Don't get me wrong, I love meeting new people. Making friends and learning about where they come from and what makes them tick will never get old to me.

The reason I don't like introductions actually stems from the fact that they typically don't tell you much at all about a person. As an example, allow me to introduce myself to you.

Hello, my name is Gary Horvath, and I'm from Maple Shade, N.J. It's nice to meet you. What brings me to Pittsburgh, you ask? Well, I graduated from Grove City College in 2013 and have been living with some friends in Highland Park since I started my internship with Trib Total Media in September. I recently was hired full time to take on the role of sports writer for the Sewickley Herald.

I think it's safe to say most people would be satisfied with that answer. It gives a solid overview of where I came from and how I spend my days. But that's not what makes me, well, me.

Over the past several months, I had the chance to get to know the Sewickley community, thanks to my time as a Pittsburgh Fellow with St. Stephen's Church, and I know that like me, that answer isn't enough for you.

That's why I'm looking forward to this opportunity to serve you on the local level. I hope that in the days to come, you'll be able to get to know me as my friends do.

My friends know that, although I fell well short of pursuing a career as a professional athlete, I'm absolutely nutty about sports. They also know that I'm passionate about storytelling, would probably die if I went a day without singing, and get sucked into semi-heated debates far more often than I'd like to admit.

I believe that family is the most important thing on God's green earth, and that peanut butter is in fact the best thing since sliced bread.

With that out of the way, I suppose it's my turn to get to know you better.

On the surface, I know this is a community with a strong focus on education and a rich history of athletic success. But it's my job to dig beneath the surface and understand the community for the individuals that comprise it.

I'm excited to be in your neighborhoods, at your games or visiting your shops, meeting you all and telling your stories along the way.

And when I do meet you, I'll be looking forward to the fact that we can skip the introductions.
