'American Coyotes' Series

Traveling by Jeep, boat and foot, Tribune-Review investigative reporter Carl Prine and photojournalist Justin Merriman covered nearly 2,000 miles over two months along the border with Mexico to report on coyotes — the human traffickers who bring illegal immigrants into the United States. Most are Americans working for money and/or drugs. This series reports how their operations have a major impact on life for residents and the environment along the border — and beyond.

Maddy Grimm

Ligonier Valley · junior Soccer, football, basketball, softball

Ligonier Valley junior Maddy Grimm is one of those special athletes that don't come around too often.

She not only excels in the classroom where's she's a 4.0 student and is ranked fifth in her class, but she's found time to play four sports — and play all of them at a very high level.

Grimm is Ligonier Valley's all-time leading goal scorer in soccer, a three-year starter and double-digit scorer in basketball and a power-hitter who slugged 10 home runs this spring in softball.

She also booted more than 40 extra points and three field goals for the Ligonier Valley football team last fall.

Grimm is mulling over numerous college offers for softball and basketball. She recently visited Indiana (Pa.) and Kent State for softball and has received a basketball offer from St. Francis (Pa.).

That makes her the Tribune-Review Girls Athlete of the Year.

Are you good in every sport you play?

“No. I don't play tennis well, and I'm not a good swimmer. But I do play golf in outings with my friend every year.”

Why did you decide to play football?

“Actually, I was at soccer practice and we were running near the football practice field. Coach (Roger) Beitel asked if I would try to kick extra points. I asked my soccer coach if I could try, and he said I had 10 to 15 minutes. I only had tennis shoes on.”

So what happened, and were you nervous?

“I didn't know what I was doing, but I remembered watching what kickers did on TV. I asked coach about the steps and he told me. With the football team watching, I got nervous but was able to make the kick. He invited me back to evening practice and told me to bring my spikes.”

What was the reaction?

“My soccer teammates asked me how I did, and I told them I got invited back. Then, I told my mother (April), and she told my dad (Terry). My dad was worried someone would fall into my knee. I asked Coach Beitel why me, and he told me I was the best he had.”

What was it like in your first game?

“I was really nervous. The game was at Homer-Center, and it was weird at first. I also was nervous during my first home game.”

Do you have a favorite sport?

“I like the intensity of basketball, and I like playing softball. Shortstop is my favorite position. I've been playing soccer since I was 4. I like the physical contact in soccer. I like all the sports I play.”

What sport will you play in college?

“For the first time in my life, I have to make a decision. I'm being recruited to play basketball and softball. I'll listen to all offers. I want to study physical therapy, athletic training and nutrition.”

You are an excellent student. What is your favorite class?

“I like physics and trigonometry. I liked my teacher and I like math. I like to apply them to real life experiences.”
