'American Coyotes' Series

Traveling by Jeep, boat and foot, Tribune-Review investigative reporter Carl Prine and photojournalist Justin Merriman covered nearly 2,000 miles over two months along the border with Mexico to report on coyotes — the human traffickers who bring illegal immigrants into the United States. Most are Americans working for money and/or drugs. This series reports how their operations have a major impact on life for residents and the environment along the border — and beyond.

Breaking in a sophomore at quarterback can be a challenge for any team. Helping the player mature mentally and physically could lead to growing pains throughout the season.

But when the quarterback is a Brumbaugh, it makes things a little easier.

Brett Brumbaugh — younger brother of South Fayette alumnus and WPIAL record-setter Christian Brumbaugh and Seton-La Salle starter Luke Brumbaugh — will take over the quarterback spot this fall for the Lions.

Brumbaugh got his start for the team last season after Mike Lerda went down with an injury. Brumbaugh started the final three games, picking up a 2-1 record while throwing for 606 yards and seven touchdowns.

“He has already gone through some of the growing pains,” South Fayette coach Joe Rossi said. “He will make some mistakes, but what he brings to the team with leadership and a big, strong arm is great.”

Brumbaugh will have an instant target in senior Zach Challingsworth. The Pitt recruit did a little of everything for South Fayette in 2011 — from receiving to running the wildcat to punting. But in 2012, Challingsworth won't need to be used in so many capacities.

“He was our go-to-guy last season,” Rossi said. “He has guys around him this season that will be able to step up. Teams won't be able to focus just on him.”

The weapons around Challingsworth will be numerous. Senior receiver Mike Fetchet returns and is a second-year starter.

Junior receivers Conner Beck and Justin Watson both return after getting playing time last season.

Juniors Grant Fetcher and Zach Walker, along with sophomore J.J. Walker, will provide the Lions a solid ground attack.

The defense also will be littered with returning players. Rossi called the secondary “tremendous,” with Beck and Challingsworth returning.

Seniors Dylan Nock and Shane Girman also are back at linebacker.
