South Side Beaver experienced its greatest football success under coach Glenn McDougal before he unexpectedly resigned after the 2000 season. After spending the past two seasons in the basement of the Big 7, the school hired him back.

“I always felt I would come back and I actually thought I'd come back sooner than I had, but (the opportunity) just hadn't presented itself,” said McDougal, who led the Rams to WPIAL and PIAA championships in 1999. “It's been an easy transition because I teach (physical education) at the school and know all the kids.”

South Side Beaver finished 1-9 and 0-9 the past two seasons under James Winner, and McDougal said his biggest goals include changing the players' mindset.

“If they would lose, they would blame somebody else — it wasn't their fault,” he said. “So that's going to be our main obstacle, I think, is getting them to believe in each other (and) trust in each other.”

McDougal also plans to change the Rams' on-field philosophy, particularly on defense, as he feels the team gave up too many big plays by being aggressive.

“We're going to make the other team work,” he said.
