Central Valley junior Macky Fouse would like to win the WPIAL Class AA title Monday, but she's focused on leading her team to a third consecutive team title in a few weeks.
Fouse, who qualified for the PIAA tournament a year ago, is one of the favorites to win the Class AA title at 3 Lakes Golf Course in Penn Hills. Neshannock freshman Marissa Kirkwood shot 79 in the semifinals, the best score in Class AA.
Haley Borkovich, a senior at Penn-Trafford, had the second-best score in the Class AAA semis. She is one of four players from Penn-Trafford competing. Both classifications will be held at the same time.
She's also one of the girls in the mix for the Class AAA title. The others are Canon-McMillan sophomore Lauren Waller, North Allegheny senior Lizzie Hammell, Shade Side Academy senior Shannon Gramley, Penn-Trafford's Mia Barchetti and Hempfield Area's Janista Numpho-Franks.
Barchetti and Borkovich finished second and third in Class AA a year ago. Numpho-Franks was fifth in Class AAA; Waller, who was at Shady Side Academy, was sixth, and Gramley claimed seventh.
“Winning the section qualifier was huge for my confidence,” Borkovich said. “I hadn't been playing well, and things came together that day.”
Borkovich was 1-over-par with three holes left at Saxon Golf Course, and she finished 4-over.
“I played well,” said Borkovich, who played a practice round Friday with her father, Mark. “I wanted to get a look at the layout, putt the greens and plan my attack. Winning would be nice, but advancing to the PIAA Western Regional is the main goal. From there, I want to advance to states.”
Fouse, who along with Barchetti played in the state tournament a year ago, wants to get back to York.
“My goal is to advance,” she said. “I also want to see my teammates get a chance to go to states.
“That's why I thinking more about the team. I want them to get a chance to compete in the state tournament.”
Fouse has planned at 3 Lakes before, and she likes the layout.
“It's a good track, and it's a perfect course for my game,” she said. “I'm excited. The competition will be good.”
The top eight golfers from each classification will advance to the PIAA Western Regional on Oct. 24 at Tom's Run Golf Course at Chestnut Ridge Resort in Blairsville.
