Jake Thieret

School: South Allegheny

Year: Junior

Sport: Soccer

Claim to fame: Thieret has scored 14 goals this season and helped the Gladiators to a 7-6 overall record and third place in WPIAL Section 1-A.

What were your goals coming into this season?

We all had high expectations. Winning the section and making the playoffs were definitely two goals. I think we have to win two of our last three to make playoffs, but we're definitely all confident.

Who is the toughest team you've faced?

I went to Serra as a freshman and sophomore, so I would definitely have to say Serra. They've been a big rival of ours ever since I've been here.

What position do you prefer to play?

Forward. When we have the ball, I like to have my back to the goal and facing my team to see what's happening and being able to distribute the ball.

What would you say is your best soccer memory?

Making the Diocesan playoffs in seventh grade. I went to St. Joseph's and we combined with St. Angela. We did well. We all kind of expected to get blown out, but we held our own and only lost, 1-0.

Do you have a favorite player or team?

My favorite team would be Chelsea and my favorite player would have to be Fernando Torres. I've followed him since he was at Liverpool. When I was a kid, I had long hair like he does. I liked him because he was like me.

What's your favorite movie?

“Never Back Down.” It's about this kid that moves to a different school because his brother is a tennis star and he meets this girl. The girl's boyfriend beats him up, but he eventually gets the girl and it all works out in the end.

If you could play in any soccer venue in the world, where would it be?

Old Trafford is definitely a place I'd love to play. As a Chelsea player, of course.

Anna Boger and Caitlin Monroe

School: Thomas Jefferson

Year: Seniors

Sport: Tennis

Claim to fame: Boger and Monroe finished third in the Section 5-AA doubles tournament and qualified for the WPIAL tournament on Thursday at Keystone Oaks. Boger will be making her second consecutive appearance in the WPIAL tournament. The duo defeated fellow Jaguars Jamie Liptak and Kristen Pavlik, 7-5, 6-2, in the section consolation final.

How did it feel to qualify?

Anna: I feel accomplished because I get a second chance. It just feels exciting. Tennis is all about your team, but with doubles it feels a little bit better because it's all on you (and your partner's) shoulders. It's good to have someone with you at least.

Caitlin: This is my first time qualifying and it feels really good. I've been playing since I was a freshman, and it just shows that all of my hard work is paying off.

How do you like your partner?

Anna: She's great. She's talented and we get along really well.

Caitlin: I love her. She's a really sweet girl and a great tennis player.

Why do you think you work well together?

Anna: We just kind of balance each other really. We're both good on the baseline and the net. No matter what, I have her back and she has mine.

Caitlin: Well, she's good up at the net, and I'm a little better down on the baseline, so we compliment each other really well.

Did it take a while to get used to playing with each other?

Anna: Not really. It was very easy to get used to playing with her because we're similar players. It kind of feels like I'm partnering myself.

Caitlin: It wasn't hard to get used to Anna. My freshman year, I was partners with Lisa Moss, and we were a pretty good team. Anna is similar to Lisa, so it wasn't that hard to get used to her this year.

Who is your favorite tennis player?

Anna: Probably Maria Sharapova, because she has had a lot of success and she portrays a good image. She isn't rude or nasty to the umpires and line judges.

Caitlin: Rafael Nadal, because he's just a really good tennis player.

What are your plans for college?

Anna: I am looking at Penn State for psychology and possibly a minor in music. I've played trombone since I was in fourth grade, but I'm not sure if I want to focus on music theory or try to become an expert at trombone.

Caitlin: I'm hoping to go to Penn State, but I'm not sure what I want to go for yet. I plan to play recreational tennis, but I'm going to focus more on school.
