High school roundup: Yough girls soccer earn share of title
Yough has never won a section title in girls' soccer in the school's history.
That's about to change.
The Lady Cougars clinched at least a share of the Section 1 AA crown with a 7-0 win over visiting Waynesburg Wednesday night.
Yough (12-2, 9-0) rolled to a 5-0 first half lead as freshman sensation Mikayla Mance scored four of her five goals.
Mance has 39 goals for the season as she increased her single-season school record.
Also scoring for the Lady Cougars were Shawna Zaken and Alex O'Brien.
Kristin Capenos earned the shutout in goal, the ninth shutout Yough has posted.
First-year Yough coach Dan Appolonia said he has been coaching most of the girls on the team since they were youngsters and this is what he has been working for.
“This feels pretty good to be this close to a section title,” Appolonia said. “I've been coaching these girls since they were five and six years old. There's been a lot of hard work put in and this is the kind of success we were hoping for the last 10 years.”
Yough can clinch the section outright Friday with a victory at winless Uniontown.
Mt. Lebanon 2, Ringgold 0
Ringgold dropped a Section 4 AAA contest to Mt. Lebanon.
“We lost but this team has so much heart,” Ringgold coach Tom Cameron said. “There is no quit in them and I am so proud of them.
“I know teams always say they are a family, but we truly are.”
The Lady Rams (6-6-1, 5-5) are at Baldwin in a section match Friday.
BV Area 8, McGuffey 1
BVA rolled to an easy Section 4 AA win.
Hayden Pascoe scored four goals to give her 24 for the season to pace the Lady Leps (12-1-1, 9-1-1).
Lauren Kovalchuk, Kylie Kikta, Stephanie Morgan and Caitlin Caldwell each added a tally for BVA while Georgia Sim scored McGuffey's lone goal.
“The girls have been focused and have been playing well,” BVA coach Paul Sasko said. “We had a nice effort and worked the ball around.
“Considering that it was our fourth game in five nights, I couldn't have asked for anything more out of them.”
The Lady Leps are off until Monday when they host long-time rival Southmoreland in an exhibition contest.
Elizabeth Forward 7, E. Allegheny 0
EF (9-3, 7-2) clinched a playoff spot in Section 4 AA with the whitewash of East Allegheny.
Seven Lady Warriors scored: Rachel Bakewell, Rachel Collage, Ali Pastore, Miranda Steinkopf, Josie Madden, Liz Biddle and Stephanie Neander.
Hannah Durant and Jen Keefer shared the shutout in goal.
The Lady Warriors go to McGuffey Saturday.
Charleroi 5, Bentworth 1
Charleroi leaped Bentworth into second place in Section 2 A with its win.
With the contest scoreless 25 minutes in, Kyra Watkins gave Charleroi (6-5-1, 6-3) the lead and the momentum, and the Lady Cougars never looked back.
Joyce Addis scored twice, while Halee Fedrick and Ashlee Riebau also got in on the scoring for Charleroi.
Madison Jones scored the lone goal for Bentworth (8-5-1, 6-3-1).
Charleroi hosts Beth-Center tonight in a section tilt, while Bentworth is off until it hosts Beth-Center Wednesday in section play.
Serra 7, Monessen 0
Monessen lost on the road in a Section 2 A contest.
The Lady Hounds (0-12, 0-10) host East Allegheny Saturday in an exhibition match.
