West Mifflin blanks Elizabeth Forward
TribLIVE Sports Videos
With each passing week, the whispers have been getting louder about how the better of the two West Mifflin quarterbacks was actually playing for Elizabeth Forward.
JaQuan Davidson spent his freshman year at West Mifflin before transferring to Elizabeth Forward, and quickly had the once downtrodden EF program on the rise within weeks.
Derrick Fulmore heard the whispers, and quieted them emphatically Friday night.
Fulmore rushed for 111 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns and threw a game-altering 88-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter, as the Titans (6-0, 6-0) clinched a playoff spot out of the Big Nine Conference with a 27-0 win at Titans Stadium.
It was West Mifflin's fourth consecutive win over EF (3-3, 3-3) and eighth out its last nine.
Fulmore downplayed his head-to-head performance against Davidson.
“There was a lot of talk in the schools, but I don't get into that,” Fulmore said. “It is just all about our team. Our team just played better today.”
A lot of that had to do with Fulmore, who had scoring runs of 35 and 33 yards, along with the long TD pass.
Jimmy Wheeler, who came into the game as the WPIAL's leading rusher, ran for 139 yards on 26 carries and scored his 15th touchdown of the year, as the Titans put up 350 yards on the No. 7-ranked defense in the WPIAL at 156.6 yards per game.
“The bottom line is that they won the battles up front,” EF coach Mike LeDonne said. “You have to give them credit. They won that battle.”
Elizabeth Forward was held to 36 yards in the first half and 92 for the game. Davidson finished with 36 yards on 15 carries and attempted 13 passes. He came into the game with 32 attempts in five game.
“They weren't moving the ball on the ground, so I think they thought they could go to the pass,” West Mifflin coach Ray Braszo said.
Wheeler scored on a 9-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter for the first score of the game. Later, West Mifflin called 21 consecutive runs before Fulmore's play-action to Marcus Martin down the middle for an 88-yard score to make it 14-0.
