Sewickley Academy graduate Ian Bangor is continuing to make a name for himself at the collegiate level.

Bangor, a junior golfer at Carnegie Mellon, was named the University Athletic Association Golf Athlete of the Week for the second straight week on Oct. 2.

The award came after Bangor finished in second place out of 93 golfers at the Vulcan Invitational, hosted by California University of Pennsylvania Sept. 29 and 30. Bangor carded a 3-under-par 211 at the 54-hole event, helping the Tartans finish as the top Division III team at the invitational.

Bangor was named to the PING Mid-Atlantic Region team in his first two seasons at Carnegie Mellon and became the Tartans' all-time wins leader last spring.

Boys golf

Both Sewickley Academy and Quaker Valley were scheduled to take part in the WPIAL team semifinals Tuesday, with the Panthers competing at Donegal Highlands Golf Course in Acme and the Quakers teeing off at Indian Run Golf Course in Avella. Results were unavailable prior to this edition's deadline.

Last week, in a rematch of their meeting from earlier this season, Sewickley Academy's boys golf team again beat Quaker Valley, 184-233. Keenan Hickton was the low scorer for the Panthers, carding a 2-under 34.

The Panthers (15-2, 12-0) then beat Vincentian and Cornell in a tri-match last Wednesday.

The Quakers (11-5, 8-3) responded to their loss by beating Vincentian.

Girls golf

Sewickley Academy will compete in the WPIAL team final today, Thursday, at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Belle Vernon, alongside Class AA foes Central Valley, Derry and Mt. Pleasant. The Panthers (8-4, 8-4) beat Seton-La Salle twice last week.

Field hockey

Sewickley Academy split a pair of games last week, beating league opponent Winchester Thurston 2-1 Thursday before falling 2-1 to Mt. Lebanon on Saturday. With the victory over Winchester Thurston, the Panthers (4-5, 4-3) surpassed their win total from the entire 2011 season. They looked to get back on the winning track Tuesday at Greensburg Central Catholic, in a game completed past the deadline for this week's edition.

Boys soccer

In a nonsection meeting of local rivals, Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy played to a scoreless tie Saturday at Nichols Field.

Neither the Panthers (13-0-1, 10-0) nor the Quakers (11-1-1, 9-1) gave up a goal in their three games last week, as Sewickley beat Neshannock twice, 6-0 and 3-0, and Quaker Valley beat Obama Academy, 5-0, and Carrick, 10-0.

Both teams returned to action Tuesday, as Quaker Valley played at West Allegheny and Sewickley Academy hosted South Side Beaver.

Girls soccer

For the second time this season, the Quaker Valley girls soccer team lost to Moon. The Quakers were shut out, 3-0, Friday at home. The week wasn't all bad, however, for the Quakers (12-2-1, 9-2), as they beat league foes Keystone Oaks and Obama Academy.

Sewickley Academy won all four games it played last week to stay unbeaten on the season. The Panthers (13-0-1, 11-0) beat Neshannock and Quigley Catholic in league action and topped nonsection foes New Brighton and Bishop Canevin. With the playoffs approaching, the Panthers were scheduled to play at Freedom on Monday.

Girls tennis

In a meeting of the top two teams in Section 6-AA, Sewickley Academy dealt Quaker Valley its first section loss of the season, 3-2, last Wednesday.

With the win, the Panthers (11-3, 11-1) avenged an earlier 4-1 loss to the Quakers (13-2, 11-1.) Both teams are now tied atop the section.

Girls volleyball

The Quaker Valley volleyball team split two section matches last week. The Quakers won a road match at Freedom, 3-0, last Tuesday. That success didn't continue, however, as Ambridge came to Quaker Valley on Thursday and won by a 3-0 score.

The Quakers (4-6, 3-3) played at New Brighton Tuesday. The contest ended too late for this week's edition.
