Thomas Jefferson tennis team tied with Indiana when play was suspended

Thomas Jefferson inadvertently took the scenic route to its WPIAL Class AA playoff tennis match Monday at Indiana.
And the Jaguars almost had to make the trip again Tuesday after their match with the Little Indians was suspended. Instead, they will play at 2 p.m. at Sewickley Academy with the winner advancing to face the Quaker Valley-Keystone Oaks winner in a WPIAL Class AA quarterfinal at about 3:30 p.m.
Thomas Jefferson (12-2), the second-place finisher in Section 5, arrived nearly an hour after its projected time and had to hurry onto the court for a quick warm-up before the two teams began their five matches. Approximately 45 minutes after play began, it had to be suspended for about 15 minutes because of rain. It was halted again, and for the rest of the day, at about 6 p.m.
“The problem here was starting and stopping and starting and stopping,” Thomas Jefferson coach Chuck Correll said. “... There's a lot of different factors involved in it, but we're going to basically come back here for three matches.”
Just before play was halted, Indiana No. 1 singles player Lucy Bujdos completed a 6-0, 6-2 win over Thomas Jefferson's Samantha Moss to even the match at 1-1. Earlier, the Jaguars took the lead when No. 1 doubles team Kristen Pavlik and Jaime Liptak claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win over Carly Morrow and Kylie Horvath.
When the matches resume, Indiana No. 2 singles player Jayci Drew is up a set and leading, 3-1, in the second against Anna Boyer, while in No. 3 singles, Thomas Jefferson's Caitlyn Monroe is up a set and trailing, 1-2, on serve in the second. In the other doubles match, Thomas Jefferson's duo of Olivia Jones and Alex Bartosch won the first set and are tied, 4-4, in the second with Mahwm Jabir and Kate Palko.
“They have a slight lead in the score, but we're right in there,” Indiana coach Ray Goss said. “Going into this, I thought that they were going to win both doubles and we would have to win three singles matches, and that looks like the way it's going to be. But ... it's really up in the air.”
