Quaker Valley handles Thomas Jefferson to reach semifinals

Thomas Jefferson pulled off one upset Tuesday to reach the second round of the WPIAL Class AA tennis tournament.
Quaker Valley made sure there won't be another.
Thomas Jefferson completed a suspended match against seventh-seeded Indiana, 3-1, but could not find a way around No. 2 seed Quaker Valley, falling 4-1.
“They showed me a lot of spirit because they had to come out and win that first one and all three came out strong,” TJ assistant coach Marie Bartoletti said. “They never gave up. They continued to fight the whole set and the whole match.”
Thomas Jefferson got to this point by playing a resilient two-day match against Indiana. The two teams were tied at 1 as Indiana won the No. 1 singles match and Thomas Jefferson took top doubles, when play was suspended Monday due to inclement weather.
Though the break could have hurt many teams, Thomas Jefferson was able to put the interruption aside and complete the win, held at Sewickley Academy, in about an hour.
Caitlin Monroe finished off Megan Clauson at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-4, to put Thomas Jefferson ahead 2-1. The No. 2 doubles team of Olivia Jones and Alex Bartosch beat Indiana's Mahwm Jabir and Kate Palko in three sets to clinch the 3-1 win.
Thomas Jefferson's No. 2 singles player, Anna Boyer, took the option to halt her match and save energy for Quaker Valley, which was scheduled for 30 minutes later. With that, the Jaguars made the short jaunt to Quaker Valley for the quarterfinals.
And it was a short stay.
Quaker Valley's Spencer Caravaggio won a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Samantha Moss at No. 1 singles in 24 minutes. Caravaggio, the WPIAL Class AA singles champion, served underhand while nursing a rotator cuff injury.
“I knew she was going to be OK,” QV coach Jeff Sebastian said.
From there, Monroe and the top doubles team of Kristen Pavlik and Jaime Liptak lost, and the match was decided.
