Ryan Archer

School: Vincentian

Year: Senior

Sport: Cross country

Claim to fame: Archer won the WPIAL Class A individual cross country championship Thursday with a time of 16 minutes, 34 seconds at Cooper's Lake Campground in Butler County. Earlier this season, Archer placed fifth at the Red, White and Blue Classic at the Schenley Park Oval in 15:58.

How does it feel to win a WPIAL title as a senior?

It feels really good. It's great for the program because we're a small school, so it's nice for Vincentian to get some recognition.

Did the heat affect you?

Yeah, sort of. It slowed down the race a lot. I just wanted to get out in front. I prepared so it wasn't that big of a factor. I made sure to stay hydrated and I stayed under my tent as long as possible.

Have you decided where you want to go to college?

Not yet. I'm looking at Carnegie Mellon and University of Richmond.

Are you planning to run cross country in college?

Yes, definitely.

How are you going to keep up with the college pace?

I'm just going to adjust my training a bit. I'm really going to try to get some more up-tempo runs at longer intervals.

Maggie Scott

School: Shady Side Academy

Year: Junior

Sport: Soccer

Claim to fame: Scott scored three goals for the Indians in an 8-0 win over South Allegheny in the WPIAL Class A quarterfinals on Oct. 24. Scott also scored four goals in a 7-1 win over Bentworth in the first round on Oct. 20. Scott — who scored 34 goals as a sophomore — finished the regular season with a team-high 23 goals.

What have you done in the playoffs to put up these offensive numbers?

We changed our formation a little bit, so I can play a more attacking position. It's helped a lot. My teammates have helped out, too.

Is there a reason why your goal total slipped from last year?

I was hurt for a little over half the season this year. I only played in six (section) season games.

What kind of injury did you have to come back from?

I hurt my hip. I messed up the ligament.

Was it hard to come back and score at this pace?

It wasn't too difficult. I've been hurt before, so it wasn't anything new. I was excited to come back.

Did you expect to have this much success early on?

No, I was not expecting this, especially in the playoffs. It's been more of a team thing. The other forwards with me knew what my numbers were before and they didn't want me to get too far behind, so that helped out.

How far can Shady Side go in the playoffs?

We play Greensburg (Central Catholic) Wednesday night. They've beaten us the last few times. With some new formations we've added, I think our chances are definitely better against them. If we play the way we have, we have a chance to beat them and move on to the finals.
