While our local football teams didn't fare too well in the playoffs, an area native piloted his team to a major upset last weekend.

Riverview High School graduate Jeff Cappa guided Wissahickon, seeded at No. 16 in the PIAA District 1 Class AAAA playoffs, to a victory over No. 1 Downingtown East in opening-round action last Friday.

A field goal as time was running out gave Wissahickon a 38-35 stunner over the No. 4-ranked team in the state.

Cappa threw a 94-yard touchdown pass to Ben Erdeljac in the waning seconds of regulation Nov. 12, 1994, to tie the WPIAL Class A first-round playoff game against Jefferson-Morgan.

Moments later, he threw a pass to twin brother Jason to win the game, 34-28, in what has been dubbed the “Miracle at the Park.”

The game was voted the most exciting moment in local sports history in a 2001 Valley News Dispatch readers' poll.

There's not much time for Jeff Cappa's current team to celebrate. Wissahickon will play a quarterfinal game Friday at Coatesville.

It was the third time in District 1 history that a No. 16 team knocked off a No. 1 team, according to newspaper reports.

Only twice in WPIAL history has a No. 16 defeated a No. 1.

Wissahickon is located in the Philadelphia suburb of Ambler in Montgomery County.

Downingtown is most famous for its role in the 1955 science fiction movie “The Blob,” starring Steve McQueen. Events in the movie center around the Downingtown Diner.

Terrific 21 volleyballers

Two Freeport High School girls volleyball players will be part of the WPIAL team that will play a team from Ohio in an interstate volleyball game.

Yellowjackets outside hitter Ashley Sample and middle hitter Lauren Franzetta were chosen.

Valley High School graduate and Lower Burrell resident Jonathan Whaley will host the third annual interstate volleyball all-star game between WPIAL standouts and a team of all-stars from Ohio District 1.

The event will take place at 4 p.m. Nov. 25 at Moon Area High School. Doors will open at 2:45.

Admission is $8 for those age 18 and older. Senior citizens and those 17 and younger can get in for $3.

Girls from both teams will be recognized at a breakfast at 9 a.m. Nov. 25 at the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott. The public is invited to the breakfast. For $25, fans can get both a breakfast ticket and a game ticket.

Myers hospitalized

Hall of Fame basketball coach Tom Myers is a patient at HealthSouth Harmarville in Indiana Township.

Myers was inducted into the Alle-Kiski Sports Hall of Fame earlier this year. The Ken High graduate won 330 games during an illustrious career at Highlands, Valley and Burrell. His 1993 Valley team was WPIAL Class AAA champion and the PIAA runner-up.
