The Quaker Valley girls soccer team is looking forward to a rematch with visiting Moon tomorrow, Friday.

Moon handed the Quakers, who entered the week 10-1-1 overall and 8-1 in Section 5-AA, their only loss.

Moon beat Quaker Valley, 7-1, on Sept. 19, and the Quakers have not forgotten.

“We knew Moon was going to be the team to beat,” Quaker Valley coach Mike Pastor said. “We're doing about as well as expected.”

In section play, Quaker Valley has defeated Keystone Oaks, Obama Academy, West Allegheny and Montour. It beat South Fayette and Carrick twice.

The Quakers have overcome injuries to do well.

“We had several of our starters miss games,” Pastor said. “We've been fortunate to have a lot of young players steps into varsity roles and do a great job.”

Junior forward Greer Monahan leads Quaker Valley with 13 goals.

Freshman Moriah Wigley (nine goals) also has excelled at forward.

“I worked very hard during the preseason to get fit and improve my foot skills,” Wigley said. “I'm with good players who lift my game.”

Senior midfielder Katie Hughes (four goals) and senior defender Laura Stinson (two goals) are other top players.

“Injuries have not slowed us down,” senior goalkeeper Morgan Felt said. “We've been able to thrive in our new section.”

Quaker Valley moved from Section 3-AA, where it finished third last year with a 9-5-0 record.

“Our main goal is to continue to improve throughout the season,” Stinson said. “We want to be playing our best soccer when the WPIAL playoffs begin in a few weeks.”

The top three teams in the section will advance to the playoffs.

Last year, Quaker Valley lost in the WPIAL quarterfinals to eventual champion Mars. It was the ninth time in 15 seasons the Quakers were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

The last time Quaker Valley won a WPIAL title was in 1992, when it repeated as Class AAA champion.

In 2003, Quaker Valley was WPIAL Class AA runner-up to Sewickley Academy.
