Greensburg Central Catholic's Shannon Hurley stood on the volleyball court at Chartiers Valley High School three seasons ago as a freshman starter and accepted a silver medal in the WPIAL Class A finals.
Hurley's final year with the Centurions has a golden hue.
In another memorable experience at Chartiers Valley, the senior outside hitter, a Winthrop recruit, hit 17 kills as part of the Centurions' overwhelming offense, which fueled No. 1 seed Greensburg Central Catholic (18-0) to a 3-0 win over No. 3 Bishop Canevin (20-2) in the Class A championship.
The title is Greensburg Central Catholic's first.
“I just remember my coach (Heather Meyer), telling me, ‘Don't worry. We're going to get a gold medal,' ” Hurley said of the second-place finish in 2009. “And now I have one.”
The Centurions, who won by scores of 25-19, 25-21 and 25-21, attacked from all angles. Senior Emma Dickson and sophomore Leah Bisignani split setting duties, and the duo also found time to combine for 17 kills.
Bisignani and junior Ashley Scalise held a block party on defense. The latter finished with six blocks for points.
“We are a lot taller team than most,” Meyer said. “I've never had a taller team during my time here.”
Seniors Alexa Kacin and Katie Hickey tracked down many of the shots that snuck by the Centurions' front row. But their hustle still sometimes failed to stifle Bishop Canevin juniors Ashley Grimm and Callie Jacobs, who had eight and six kills, respectively.
The Crusaders just lacked a way to slow Greensburg Central Catholic's collection of stars.
“We had to be perfect on defense,” Bishop Canevin coach Kevin Walters said. “We've been pretty close to perfect all season. … We could've been a little better today, but you'll have that.”
Both Greensburg Central Catholic and Bishop Canevin advance to the PIAA tournament, which begins Tuesday.
