MLB notebook: Dodgers, Greinke agree to 6-year, $147M deal
Free-agent pitcher Zach Greinke and the Dodgers agreed to a six-year, $147-million deal Saturday, according to multiple reports.
CBSSports.com and Yahoo report that Greinke still must pass a physical, meaning the deal can't become official until at least Monday.
Once finalized, the right-hander's contract will be the second-largest ever given to a pitcher, trailing only CC Sabathia's $161-million deal with the Yankees.
Greinke went 15-5 with a 3.48 ERA and 200 strikeouts last season with the Brewers and Angels. He won the 2009 American Cy Young while with the Royals and has a career 3.77 ERA.
Phillies get Young from Rangers
The Phillies acquired seven-time All-Star infielder Michael Young from the Rangers for right-handed reliever Josh Lindblom and minor league reliever Lisalverto Bonilla.
Young agreed to waive his no-trade clause. The Rangers also will pay a significant portion of Young's salary for 2013. Young is due to earn $16 million, and reports stated the Phillies will pay him only about $6 million of it.
Young leaves as the club's career leader in hits (2,230). Young hit .277 with eight home runs and 67 RBI last season.
Reds re-sign Ludwick
A person familiar with the deal told the Associated Press that free-agent outfielder Ryan Ludwick is returning to the Reds for a two-year contract worth $15 million.
He hit .275 with 26 home runs and 80 RBI last season.
A-Rod surgery set
Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez said he will have surgery on his injured left hip in mid-January.
The Yankees announced earlier this month that Rodriguez needs surgery to correct a torn labrum and other problems with his left hip. He could miss up to six months.
Bay joins Mariners
The Mariners finalized a one-year contract with outfielder Jason Bay, returning the one-time slugger to familiar territory in the hopes of revitalizing his career.
The Mariners and Bay, a former Pirates star, reached an agreement on a one-year deal earlier in the week.
