• The Yankees want Joe Girardi to return as manager next season. Girardi was hired after the 2007 season, and his contract expires at the end of October. Crippled by injuries, New York had its poorest record since 1992 and finished tied for third in the AL East at 85-77. “He knows we'd like to have him stay and continue as manager of the New York Yankees as we move forward,” general manager Brian Cashman said.

• The Royals and manager Ned Yost agreed to a two-year contract extension after wrapping up an 86-76 season, the best finish for the franchise in 24 years. Yost's contract was set to expire after the season, and the Royals announced the extension Tuesday.

• Ron Washington will return as Rangers' manager in 2014, according to CBSSports.com. Washington, 61, is 611-524 (.538) with two AL West titles and two AL pennants in seven seasons as the manager. The Rangers lost a tiebreaking game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday and missed the 2013 postseason.

• Andre Ethier may be limited to pinch-hitting duties in the NL Division Series because of a left ankle injury, leaving the Dodgers still undecided on whether to include the outfielder on the playoff roster.

• NBC Sports reported that the Braves left second baseman Dan Uggla off their playoff roster for the NL Division Series. The 33-year-old batted .099 with a .416 OPS over his final 129 regular-season plate appearances.

• Blue Jays right-hander Josh Johnson underwent right elbow surgery Tuesday. Johnson went 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA this season.

• Major League Baseball's average attendance fell 1.2 percent. The average was 30,514, down from 30,895 last year and the peak of 32,785 in 2007.
