All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel and the Braves avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a $42 million, four-year contract.

Kimbrel gets a $1 million signing bonus under Sunday's deal and salaries of $7 million this year, $9 million in 2015, $11 million in 2016 and $13 million in 2017. The Braves have a $13 million option for 2018 with a $1 million buyout.

The agreement allows the Braves to retain one of baseball's most dominant closers. He has 138 saves in the last three seasons. Last year, Kimbrel saved 50 games with a 1.21 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 67 innings.

Dempster done

Red Sox pitcher Ryan Dempster said he will not play this season.

The 36-year-old right-hander said he is stepping away for physical reasons and to spend more time with his family. Dempster finished last season 8-9 with a 4.57 ERA and didn't get a start during the Red Sox's run to a World Series title.

Machado reports

Manny Machado reported to the Orioles' spring training camp and got right to work. He's not making promises about being ready for Opening Day.

Four months after having left-knee surgery, the All-Star third baseman took batting practice and fielded grounders.

“I'm going to try to play as many games as I can. If I miss the first week or two weeks or whatever it may be, once I get going, I'm not going to stop,” Machado said.

Around the league

Outfielder Josh Reddick and the Athletics avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a $2.7 million, one-year contract. ... The Red Sox signed reliever Francisco Cordero to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league camp. ... Pitcher Tim Hudson threw his first bullpen session for the Giants. Hudson, who was with the Braves last year, is coming off a severe injury to his right ankle.
