'American Coyotes' Series

Traveling by Jeep, boat and foot, Tribune-Review investigative reporter Carl Prine and photojournalist Justin Merriman covered nearly 2,000 miles over two months along the border with Mexico to report on coyotes — the human traffickers who bring illegal immigrants into the United States. Most are Americans working for money and/or drugs. This series reports how their operations have a major impact on life for residents and the environment along the border — and beyond.

The Cardinals said an MRI exam on right-hander Michael Wacha's injured shoulder showed progress but not enough for him to resume throwing.

General manager John Mozeliak said Monday that Wacha, the NL Championship Series MVP last fall, will be evaluated again in two weeks. Mozeliak said continued treatment along with weight training to strengthen the area around the stress fracture was in the pitcher's best interests.

Wacha has been on the 15-day disabled list since June 18. He's 5-5 with a 2.79 ERA for the defending National League champions.

Encarnacion on DL

The Blue Jays put All-Star first baseman Edwin Encarnacion on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right quadriceps.

Encarnacion ranks among the major league leaders with 26 home runs and 70 RBIs. He was picked Sunday for the AL All-Star team but won't be able to play in the game July 15 at Minnesota.

He will be replaced in the All-Star Game by Seattle's Kyle Seager.

Trout, Cabrera decline HR Derby invites

Angels outfielder Mike Trout and Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera declined invitations to the Home Run Derby, according to multiple reports. So far, the only confirmed Home Run Derby participants are captains Jose Bautista of the Blue Jays and Troy Tulowitzki of the Rockies and Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton.

Around the league

Indians center fielder Michael Bourn could miss one month with a strained left hamstring. The team said an MRI taken Monday confirmed a “mild to moderate” sprain. ... Diamondbacks right-hander Bronson Arroyo needs Tommy John surgery. A date has not yet been set.
