Get ready for another week of RG3 guesswork.

Coach Mike Shanahan said Monday that he's still waiting for a thumbs-up from the doctors before declaring that Robert Griffin III can return to game action.

The rookie quarterback sprained the lateral collateral ligament his right knee in last week's win over the Baltimore Ravens and missed Sunday's 38-21 victory over the Cleveland Browns.

The sprain was mild, and Griffin made a case for staying in the lineup when he moved well in practice late last week. Shanahan waited until Saturday night to announce that backup Kirk Cousins would make the start and said he was taking the doctors' advice. Griffin immediately made it known that he was unhappy with the decision.

Browns waive Patterson

The Cleveland Browns waived defensive back Dimitri Patterson.

Patterson, a former Philadelphia Eagle who joined the Browns as an unrestricted free agent in 2011, appeared in seven games this season with four starts. He posted 28 tackles and broke up five passes.

Patterson signed a 3-year, $16 million deal in offseason with $6 million guaranteed.

'Skins' tackle suspended

Washington Redskins tackle Jordan Black was suspended Monday without pay for four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance enhancing substances, the team's sixth drugs-related suspension in less than two seasons.

Black's suspension began immediately and will include postseason games if the Redskins advance to the playoffs this season.

Washington left tackle Trent Williams, tight end Fred Davis and cornerback Phillip Buchanon all received four-game suspensions from the league last year. Safety Tanard Jackson was suspended for the season this year, and Cedric Griffin is serving a four-game suspension.

The 32-year-old Black had to rapidly gain weight for training camp when the Redskins signed him this summer after he spent a year out of football.

Vick playing ... on scout team

Michael Vick went from MVP candidate to scout team quarterback in two years.

Back from a concussion that forced him to miss five games, Vick is finishing out the season with the Philadelphia Eagles (4-10) on the sideline. He may not even be active for Sunday's game against Washington (8-6).

Coach Andy Reid already named rookie Nick Foles the starter for the rest of the season a few weeks ago. The Eagles have been out of playoff contention for a while, so Reid decided to look toward a future that may not include him.

Vick may have played his last game for the Eagles. Vick is due to make nearly $16 million in 2013, far too much for a backup. Only $3 million is guaranteed, however, and the Eagles won't have to pay that if Vick is cut by Feb. 3.
