NFL notebook: Torn ACL sidelines Rams QB Bradford for season
Rams quarterback Sam Bradford has a torn ACL in his left knee for the second straight year and is out for the season.
Coach Jeff Fisher confirmed the extent of the injury Sunday night.
“We lost our quarterback,” Fisher said. “For Sam, it was devastating.”
Bradford was injured in the first quarter of Saturday night's 33-14 preseason victory at Cleveland. He was hit on his left side by Browns defensive end Armonty Bryant as he threw a pass.
Bradford, the first overall pick of the 2010 draft, missed the last nine games last season after getting injured at Carolina. Veteran Shaun Hill is the backup, and the Rams also have rookie Garrett Gilbert and Austin Davis on the roster.
Panthers QB Newton has rib injury
Quarterback Cam Newton will miss the Panthers' final preseason game after an MRI revealed a hairline fracture in his ribs.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Newton will be evaluated at the end of the week, but he expects the two-time Pro Bowl quarterback will be ready for Carolina's Sept. 7 regular-season opener against Tampa Bay.
Broncos' Prater's suspension alcohol-related
Matt Prater's lawyer said the NFL initially threatened a yearlong suspension before agreeing to ban the Broncos kicker four games for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
Harvey Steinberg said Prater's suspension was alcohol-related.
Prater led the league last year by making 25 of 26 field goals (96.2 percent).
Marino return to Dolphins in front-office role
Dan Marino was announced as a newly hired special adviser to Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, a move that has been expected for some time.
Marino, a Central Catholic and Pitt product, was briefly with the Dolphins in 2004 as their senior vice president of football operations. He resigned after less than a month, citing family and other reasons.
Jets' Patterson ends disappearing act
Dimitri Patterson's mysterious absence appears over.
The veteran cornerback was set to rejoin the Jets on Sunday night after not showing up for the team's game against the Giants on Friday and having no direct communication with anyone in the organization since.
Panthers cut ex-Valley, Steelers WR Clemons
The Panthers cut 10 players, including wide receiver Toney Clemons. Clemons, a Valley High School graduate, was a seventh-round pick by the Steelers in 2012. He had three receptions for 41 yards for the Jaguars in 2012.
