NFL notebook: Rams leave Sam off practice squad
The Rams signed 10 players to their practice squad. As expected, Michael Sam was not among them.
The Rams added two each at linebacker, offensive line, wide receiver and safety Monday, fortifying needy positions. Sam starred at defensive line for Missouri, but coach Jeff Fisher said the defensive line was the strongest group on the team.
Rookie quarterback Garrett Gilbert and seven others were among the cuts that got the roster to 53 players.
The group includes linebackers Denicos Allen and Kevin Riddick, wide receivers Emory Blake and Justin Veltung, safeties Christian Bryant and Matt Daniels, plus tackle Sean Hooey and guard Brandon Washington. Defensive tackle Matt Conrath also was added.
Allen was cut by the Panthers and Reddick had been with the Saints.
Report: Raiders tab QB Carr for Week 1
The Raiders are starting rookie quarterback Derek Carr to open the season, according to Fox Sports. Carr will get the nod over Matt Schaub for Sunday's game at the Jets.
Carr, a second-round pick from Fresno State, completed 11 of 13 passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns in the preseason finale against the Seahawks.
The Raiders acquired Schaub from the Texans in the offseason, was 24 of 47 for 218 yards with no touchdowns and one interception in the preseason.
Gronk promises he will play Sunday
Star tight end Rob Gronkowski stood in front of his Gillette Stadium locker Monday and announced he will be playing in the Patriots' opener at Miami this Sunday.
Saying he is “super excited,” Gronkowski vowed to be on the field after he didn't play in any of the four preseason games as he completed his recovery from December right knee surgery.
Gronkowski, who tore his right ACL and MCL on Dec. 8, is a two-time Pro Bowler and was an All-Pro in 2011. He has 226 catches with 42 touchdowns in 50 regular-season games.
Last season, coming off multiple surgeries and an arm infection, he appeared in seven games, catching 39 passes, four for touchdowns, before going down on a hit by safety T.J. Ward, then of the Browns.
Titans, K Succop agree to deal
Veteran kicker Ryan Succop agreed to a one-year deal with the Titans who chose to go with experience rather than an undrafted rookie.
Agent Joel Turner said Succop is happy with a “very good opportunity in a fine organization.”
The Chiefs released Succop on Saturday, going with an undrafted option at kicker. Succop, 27, hit 81 percent of his field goals over his past five seasons and his career-long is 54 yards. He has spent the past five seasons with the Chiefs who drafted him with the final pick of the 2009 draft.
Tennessee opens at Kansas City on Sunday.
Welker returns to practice following concussion
Wes Welker returned to practice for the first time since sustaining a concussion in an Aug. 23 preseason game against the Texans.
The Denver slot receiver ran short routes during the 20-minute viewing period open to the media.
Welker's concussion was his third in 10 months.
Around the league
Panthers quarterback Cam Newton returned to the practice field wearing an oversized flak jacket designed to provide added protection for his fractured ribs. ... Giants coach Tom Coughlin said it might be another three weeks until first-round draft pick Odell Beckham Jr. gets on the field. The wide receiver from LSU missed almost all of training camp with a hamstring injury and did not play in any of the team's five preseason games. ... The Rams were awarded their waiver claim for quarterback Case Keenum, according to multiple reports. Keenum was cut by the Texans.
