The NHL suspended Washington Capitals defenseman John Erskine for three games for elbowing Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds.

Erskine was punished Saturday for a hit he delivered to Simmonds' face that sent him to the ice with a bloody nose in the first period of Washington's 3-2 victory Friday. Erskine wasn't penalized.

Erskine will miss games against the Penguins on Sunday and a matchup with Toronto.

• The Dallas Stars placed left wing Ray Whitney on the injured list because of a lower-body injury.

• Blue Jackets defenseman James Wisniewski was helped off the ice after landing back-first against the end boards in the second period against the Red Wings.
