• New York Rangers defenseman Marc Staal will be sidelined indefinitely after being hit in the eye with a puck, the team said. An ophthalmologist and a maxillofacial surgeon who examined Staal on Wednesday are optimistic that the 27-year-old will make a full recovery, the Rangers said in an emailed release. Staal was forced to leave Tuesday night's 4-2 win over Philadelphia during the third period after a slap shot by the Flyers' Kimmo Timonen was deflected upward and struck Staal in the right eye. He has two goals and nine assists in 21 games this season.

• The Rangers added veteran defenseman Roman Hamrlik to the roster while they wait to find out the severity of Staal's eye injury. New York claimed the 38-year-old Hamrlik off waivers from the Washington Capitals on Wednesday. Hamrlik, the active leader with 1,383 NHL games played, was waived by the Capitals on Tuesday after playing in only four games this season. He is in the final season of a two-year, $7 million contract.

• Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa was out of the lineup against Colorado because of an upper-body injury. Hossa was scratched just before Wednesday night's game. Hossa has 10 goals and eight assists this season.

• Surgery had been weighing on Panthers center Stephen Weiss' mind for more than a year. An MRI last year revealed some troubling things. He had undergone surgery on his right wrist at the end of the 2008-09 season and was willing to deal with soreness the rest of his career if it meant avoiding a second procedure on the wrist. After having another MRI and consulting with specialists Monday, though, Weiss decided to have season-ending surgery. Weiss said the procedure will be done Tuesday in Cleveland by Dr. Thomas Graham.
