Rifle/trap leagues

• Ruffs Dale was shooting at home Thursday, but Youngwood won another weekly competition in the Twi-Night Trap League and remains in first place.For the season, Youngwood has 66 points. Ruffs Dale has 58, Hecla 43.5, Connellsville 35.5 and East Huntingdon 22. Shooters who recorded perfect scores of 25 were, from Youngwood, Rowland Jones, Gordon Morgan, Brian Sirnic, Joe Kislan, John Peairs, Garrett Davis, Butch Morgan and Don Houck; from Ruffs Dale Jon Schroyer, Andy Zborovsky and Myron Reach; from Hecla John Gaeble; from East Huntingdon Sean Shaffer; and from Connellsville Bob Baer, Jim Nagy and Tom Kaylor.

Events

• Kids ages 8-16 can still sign up for a youth field day set for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 27 at Westmoreland County's Mammoth Park. The free event will let youths try trap shooting, muzzleloading, archery, fly fishing, a rock wall, boating and more. There will also be Civil War re-enactors, a Native American demonstration and a forest and wildfire firefighter program. Register at www.co.westmoreland.pa.us/parks. • Shaner Sportsman's Club will hold its annual free youth day for kids ages 8 to 15 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 3. There will be trap, muzzleloader, .22 rifle and archery shooting, trapping, waterfowl and turkey hunting seminars, bluebird box building, fly tying, and a Native American demonstration. All kids get lunch and a grab bag. The event is limited to 50 youths, however. Preregistration is required. Contact: 724-872-8431.

• The Neshannock Creek Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society will host its 18th annual sportsmen's banquet Aug. 9 at the Scott Township Fire Hall, located at 1027 Montdale Road in Scott Township. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 7:30. Individual membership and dinner tickets are $50. There are also membership and spouse packages, sponsorship packages and free tickets for children who have recently completed a hunter safety course. • In conjunction with the International Bowhunters World Championships and archery festival, Seven Springs Mountain Resort will host a Bowhunters Open shoot Aug. 9-10. It's a two-day, 40-target trophy shoot with adult and youth classes. Shoot time swill be assigned and posted prior to the event. Cost is $25 per youth, $40 per adult. Contact: 800-452-2223.

Shoots on tap

• The Tri-County Chapter of Pheasants Forever will host a sporting clays shoot starting at 9 a.m. on Aug. 17 at California Hill Gun Club in Washington County. The cost is $60 and includes 100 targets, a steak dinner and raffles. Contact: Rich Kovacic at 724-785-3540 or richkovacic@yahoo.com.

• The Allegheny Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society will host a fun shoot and pig roast barbeque Aug. 17 at Castlewood Rod and Gun Club, located at 2964 Shaffer Road in New Castle. Registration starts at 8 a.m., with shooting starting at 9. Cost for the 100-target event is $65 if you register in advance, $75 the day of the event. • Kingston Veterans and Sportsmen's Club, at 138 Kingston Club Road in Latrobe, will hold a 3-D archery shoot Aug. 11, with registration from 8 a.m. to noon at the clubhouse. Youths and cubs shoot free on this day. Contact: 724-539-9303.

• Trafford Sportsmen's Club will hold a 3-D archery shoot July 21, with registration from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $8 per shooter, though youths 12 and younger shoot for free. Contact: 412-372-3820. On the web: traffordsportsmen.org.

• Sportsmen's Association of Greensburg will hold a CMP-style vintage/modern sniper match, with shooting at 300 and 500 yards, on July 21. Registration starts at 8 a.m., with shooting starting at 9. Cost is $15 for adults, $5 for juniors. Contact: 724-433-7639.

• Irwin Sportsmen's Association holds action pistol shoots at 4 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of the month, pistol pin shoots at 5:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays and silhouette shoots starting at 9 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month. A ladies pistol league shoots at 6:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month. All events are open to the public. On the web: rwinsportsmen.com.

• East Huntingdon Sportsmen's Association will hold a 3-D archery shoot Aug. 4, with registration from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for juniors ages 12 to 16. Youths 11 and younger shoot for free. The kitchen will be open. Call 724-887-5404. The club hosts trap practice Mondays at 7 p.m. Cost is $3 for a round of 25 birds. The public is welcome. The club also is holding an indoor archery league, with shoots Monday nights. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with shooting starting at 7. Club membership is not required to shoot. • Saltsburg Sportsmen's Club will hold a 3-D archery shoot Aug. 4, with registration from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for youths and free to cubs. Contact: 724-639-0360.

• Millvale Sportsman's Club, at 170 Sunny Hill Road in Wexford, hosts trap shoots from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, skeet shoots from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays and five-stand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays. • South Connellsville Rod and Gun Club holds trap shooting every Monday starting at 5 p.m. The public is welcome.

• Ellsworth Sportsmen's trap range is open Fridays at 7 p.m. for league and practice shooting. Cost is $4 per round and the public is welcome. Food and drinks are available for purchase. • Sutersville Sportsmen's Club holds trap practice beginning at 6 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. Tuesdays. The public is welcome. Contact: 724-872-0989.

• Connellsville Sportsmen's Club hosts trap and skeet practice every Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. All shooters and the public are welcome. Instruction is available.

• Rostraver Sportsmen and Conservation Association holds big bore pistol and .22 longrifle shoots from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays and trap practice at 10 a.m. Thursdays and 1 p.m. Saturdays. Contact: 724-872-4399.

• Shannock Valley Sportsmen's Club in Yatesboro holds trap practice every Wednesday at 6 p.m. The public is invited to all events.

• Hecla's trap range is open for practice from 5 to 8:30 p.m. every Wednesday. The public is welcome. Contact: 724-423-6090 after 2 p.m.

• Fort Hand Rifle Club in North Vandergrift holds an ARA-sanctioned smallbore benchrest shoot on the second Saturday of every month. The club also hosts an NRA-sanctioned smallbore metallic silhouette match on the second Sunday of every month. Contact: 724-726-9580.

• Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen's Club holds outdoor civilian marksmanship program shoots at 11 a.m. the third Sunday of every month, with sign-ups and a safety orientation beginning at 9:30; outdoor pistol, NMC and MPRL shoots at 6 p.m. Mondays; five-stand shoots are held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. the first and third Sundays of the month; trap shoots are held from 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays; there's a Tres Bandidos shoot at 6 p.m. the fifth Wednesday. • West Penn Sportsmen's Club in Murrysville holds five stand shoots from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays. The trap ranges are open 4:30 to 9 p.m. Thursdays.

• East Monongahela Sportsmen's Club holds 25-yard pin shoots at 6:30 p.m. Mondays; cost is $6. On Thursdays, the club runs trap shoots for $2.50 per round and 50-yard pin shoots on the pistol range for $6; both events start at 6:30 p.m. All events are open to the public. Contact: 412-384-4747.

• White Oak Rod and Gun Club holds CMP shoots from 9 to 11 a.m. on the second Sunday of each month. There are indoor 3-D archery shoots from 6 to 9 p.m. every Thursday. Cost is $3 for adults, $1 for kids ages 12 to 16, and free to those 11 and younger and 65 and older. Skeet and 5-stand shoots are from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, Fridays and on sporting clays Sundays. • Pitcairn Monroeville Sportsmen's Club, 505 Mosside Blvd., North Versailles, hosts Civilian Marksmanship Program and practical pistol shoots at 9 a.m. the first Sunday of each month, archery practice at 6 p.m. Mondays, practical pistol practice at 6 p.m. Thursdays, and trap practice at 6 p.m. Thursdays, 10 a.m. Saturdays, and 1 p.m. Sundays.
