• George Daniel, a gold medal-winning fly fishermen, guide and instructor, will be the guest speaker at the Wednesday meeting of the Tri-County Trout Club. He will discuss “dynamic nymphing” and have autographed copies of his book for sale. Doors open at 7 p.m., with the meeting getting underway at 7:30 p.m. at Fisher Hall in Lower Burrell Lake Park. Members get in free; nonmembers pay $5.
• The Pennsylvania Game Commission will conduct one game land tour locally this fall. The 7 1⁄2-mile, self-guided driving trout will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday on game land 108 in Cambria County. It will showcase a rehabilitated strip-mined area that's been converted to small-game habitat, wildlife habitat food plots and a deer enclosure fence. Each tour participant will be provided a brochure with directions and information about various features along the tour route. The tour begins at the State Game Lands access road three-tenths of a mile north of Frugality, along State Route 53 in White Township, just minutes away from the main beach at Prince Gallitzin State Park. The tour will conclude on State Route 865 near Blandburg in Reade Township.
• Possum Hollow Sportsman's Club, 352 Possum Hollow Road, Wampum, will hold a concealed weapons permit class from 6 to 10 p.m. on Oct. 16. The class is $75. Participants will become eligible for nonresident permits for Utah and Arizona, which are recognized in most places in the country. Separate fees for the actual permits and for fingerprints can be paid later.
• Tri-County Chapter of Pheasants Forever and Fairbank Rod and Gun Club will hold their 12th annual youth pheasant hunt Saturday. The first 50 kids ages 12 to 16 to sign up will get to not only hunt over pointing dogs, but also shoot blackpowder guns and sporting clays and see a trapping demonstration. Ammunition will be provided, but youngsters must have a hunting license. Preregistration is required by calling Rich Kovacic at 724-984-9641.
Shoots on tap
• Sigel Sportsmen's Club, 246 Sportsmen's Land, just off Route 949 north in Sigel, will hold several fall turkey shoots. They're set for Oct. 20 and 27 and Nov. 3. Registration starts at 1:30 p.m. Cost is $2 per shot. Bring your shotgun, but ammunition will be provided. Refreshments will be available.
• Frazier-Simplex Rifle Club, Jefferson Avenue, Washington, will hold open PTO shooting matches Friday-Oct. 13, Nov. 8-10 and Dec. 13-15. Cost is $10 per team, $15 for one gun and $25 for two guns. • Sportsmen's Association of Greensburg will hold a 2x500 novelty match Sunday. Registration starts at 8 a.m., with shooting starting at 9. Cost is $15 for adults, $5 for juniors. Call 724-433-7639.
• Irwin Sportsmen's Association holds action pistol shoots at 4 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of the month, pistol pin shoots at 5:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays and silhouette shoots starting at 9 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month. • East Huntingdon Sportsmen's Association hosts trap practice Mondays at 7 p.m. Cost is $3 for a round of 25 birds. The public is welcome. The club also is holding an indoor archery league, with shoots Monday nights. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with shooting starting at 7 p.m. Club membership is not required to shoot. • Ellsworth Sportsmen's Club will hold a flintlock money shoot and 12-gauge meat shoot at noon Sunday. The club's trap range is open Fridays at 7 p.m. for league and practice shooting. • East Monongahela Sportsmen's Club holds 25-yard pin shoots at 6:30 p.m. Mondays; cost is $6. On Thursdays, the club runs trap shoots for $2.50 per round and 50-yard pin shoots on the pistol range for $6; both events start at 6:30 p.m. All events are open to the public. Call 412-384-4747.
• White Oak Rod and Gun Club holds CMP shoots from 9 to 11 a.m. on the second Sunday of each month. There are indoor 3-D archery shoots from 6 to 9 p.m. every Thursday.
