Pens replace Asham with Winnipeg’s Glass

Pens sign Upper St. Clair grad Reese
The Penguins added to their depth on defense by plucking Upper St. Clair graduate Dylan Reese from the Islanders.
Reese, who played youth hockey for the defunct Pittsburgh Forge, signed a one-year, two-way deal. He will make $600,000 if he plays in the NHL.
Reese, 27, has played in 74 regular-season games, scoring three goals and recording 17 points.
“If I was home, I would probably be on the South Side celebrating with my boys,” Reese said.
Reese was a Rangers seventh-round pick in 2003 and played four seasons at Harvard.

The Penguins replaced one fourth-liner with another when the free-agent signing period opened Sunday.
Right wing Arron Asham left the Penguins for the New York Rangers. Moments later, the Penguins signed winger Tanner Glass to a two-year, $2.2 million contract. Asham signed a two-year, $2 million deal with the Rangers.
Asham wanted to return to the Penguins, but he said he was never given an offer.
“I couldn't lay all my eggs in one basket,” he said. “I had to look around.”
In Glass, the Penguins have secured the services of a similar but younger player.
“My game is all about being physical,” he said. “It's what I do. I like to get licks in on defensemen. I'm an up-tempo kind of player.”
Glass, 28, is a rugged winger who has been involved in 40 NHL fights. He finished 10th last season with 246 hits.
Much like Asham, Glass isn't afraid to drop the gloves.
“It's part of my game,” he said. “I know we've got great players like (Sidney) Crosby, (Evgeni) Malkin and (Kris) Letang. I'll be a good teammate and will help protect those guys.”
Glass was forced to decide between the Penguins and a Vancouver team that he played for from 2009-11. Both made “almost identical” offers, Glass said.
He said coach Dan Bylsma's up-tempo system should complement his game.
“I just think they presented me with a little bit of a bigger role,” he said.
Glass isn't blessed with a terrific scoring touch but notched a career-high five goals with the Winnipeg Jets last season. The upcoming season will be Glass' sixth.
Glass is a Regina, Saskatchewan, native and a graduate of Dartmouth. Glass, defenseman Ben Lovejoy, winger Craig Adams and newly acquired defenseman Dylan Reese give the Penguins a heavy amount of Ivy League graduates.
“We'll discuss which angles to bank the puck off the boards while we're on the bench,” Glass joked.
In other news, the Penguins:
• Brought back enforcer Steve MacIntyre. He signed a two-year, two-way deal that will pay him $625,000 at the NHL level. The left wing played in 12 games with the Penguins last season and 24 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
• Signed goalie Jeff Zatcoff to a two-year, two-way contract. He has been an AHL standout in the Kings' organization, going 52-45-6 during the past four seasons. A Detroit native, Zatcoff produced no worse than a .911 save percentage during his past four AHL seasons. He figures to start the season in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
• Added forward Riley Holzapfel. A former Atlanta Thrashers second-round pick, Holzapfel signed a one-year, two-way deal worth $525,000 at the NHL level.
