Matt Cooke was injured Friday during a practice organized by Penguins players.

Six players practiced at Southpointe. Cooke was clipped by Sidney Crosby's stick blade during a drill.

Cooke did not finish the session because of a gash on his forehead. Crosby and teammate Pascal Dupuis tended to him in the dressing room, using gauze from an on-site first aid kit to bandage the wound. Cooke did not lose consciousness, teammates said, and left to seek medical treatment. He was not available for comment.

His injury was the first to caused a player to leave one of the Penguins' Southpointe sessions, which began about two weeks before the NHL lockout began in mid-September. Players cannot have contact with team personnel during the lockout, so Cooke did not have access to the Penguins' medical staff.

“That's something we try not to think about or remind ourselves of,” Crosby said of injuries that cannot be treated by team personnel. “You hope that if (you get hurt), it's not too serious, but it's kind of inevitable.”
