SUNRISE, Fla. — Center Evgeni Malkin skated by himself in Pittsburgh on Wednesday morning, Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said.

Malkin (concussion) had not taken the ice since he was injured Friday on a collision into the end zone boards at Consol Energy Center. He is on injured reserve retroactive to Saturday.

Bylsma described Malkin as symptom-free since Tuesday and said there is no timetable for other activity.

NHL protocol mandates Malkin must receive clearance from a physician or medical personnel with concussion training before returning to contact. He must pass a cognitive baseline test before receiving clearance to resume playing.

Malkin did not accompany the team on its three-game road trip that continues Thursday night at Carolina. The trip concludes Saturday night in Montreal.
