The Penguins signed defenseman Mark Eaton on Monday to a one-year, $725,000 contract.

Eaton has been with the Penguins in a tryout capacity for the past five days after playing six games earlier this season with the team's AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre.

A member of the Penguins' 2009 Stanley Cup champion team, Eaton played in Pittsburgh from 2006-10. Although he has dealt with many injuries during his career, Eaton, 35, has long been a steady NHL defenseman and played on a pairing with defenseman Kris Letang during the 2009 playoffs.

Eaton played the past two seasons with the New York Islanders. He has appeared in 627 career NHL games with four teams, scoring 24 goals and 61 assists and posting a zero plus-minus rating.

The Penguins also placed injured center Evgeni Malkin on the injured reserve list retroactive to Friday, when he suffered a concussion against Florida. Malkin isn't with the team on its three-game road trip, which begins Tuesday in Florida.
