Detroit right-hander Doug Fister pitched remarkably in Game 2 of the World Series, taking a shutout bid into the seventh inning after being hit in the head by a line drive in the second.

Although he showed few ill effects from that scary moment, the Tigers were still keeping an eye on him.

“He will be checked out,” manager Jim Leyland said Friday. “We will take care of everything.”

A team spokesman later said trainer Kevin Rand pronounced Fister fine. Leyland felt comfortable enough about Fister's prognosis that he joked about flying back to Detroit with the pitcher.

“He was sitting right behind his folks, and I had a nice conversation with him,” Leyland said. “I'm a little worried about him because this morning he didn't remember our conversation — no, I'm just kidding.”

• A person familiar with the Marlins' managerial search said the team interviewed Larry Bowa for the job. The person also said Reds pitching Bryan Price interviewed Friday. A third candidate is former major league catcher Mike Redmond, who interviewed Wednesday. Bowa, 66, has been an analyst the past two years for MLB Network.

• The White Sox promoted three of their top front-office personnel. Rick Hahn, who has been with the team since 2000, was promoted to senior vice president/general manager. Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf tabbed Howard Pizer as senior executive vice president, and longtime senior vice president/general manager Ken Williams was promoted to executive vice president. Williams was the fourth-longest tenured GM in baseball. He just completed his 12th season, a run that included a World Series championship in 2005 that ended an 87-year drought.

• The Royals claimed right-hander Chris Volstad on outright waivers from the Cubs. Volstad, 26, made 21 starts with Chicago and finished 3-12, with a 6.31 ERA in 1111⁄3 innings.

• The Giants' shutout of the Tigers drew a record-low television rating for Game 2 of the World Series. San Francisco's 2-0 win Thursday on Fox earned a 7.8 fast national rating and 12 share, down 12 percent from last year's Cardinals-Rangers matchup. The previous low was an 8.1 for the 2008 Phillies-Rays series.
